[SOLVED] WD Hard drive is not detected by MSI P6n SLI Platinum

My new WD 320 GB SATA Hard drive isnt being detected by my MSI P6n SLI Platinum motherboard.

I have no jumpers in the HDD.
The BIOS detects the optical IDE drive, but not the SATA HDD.
I am trying to install windows on this drive.
What could be wrong? Could my motherboard need SATA drivers?

I also read this thread and this post seems to have an explanation. Where do i put the jumper to make it compatable?

First of all, when you load an OS on a Sata drive, it is simply easier if you unplug your IDE hard drive until you get that done.

Second, most new hard drive come set to Sata II and many boards (don't know what board you have, so can't tell from here) are Sata I copatible. If that is the case, you must set the jumpers on that Sata to be Sata I compatible.
Thanks in advance.

Not all SATA drives have a jumper for SATA I or II. It will depend on your HDD.

Ensure you are using the first SATA connector on the MB. You may also need to ensure you have the SATA ports properly configured in the BIOS.

Re: WD Hard drive is not detected by MSI P6n SLI Platinum

Installing Xp will require either slipstreaming the drivers into the install ISO and reburning ( google nlite for that ) or using the F6 prompt to load them from floppy during the install. You can also try setting the SATA ports to IDEmode/compatibility/legacy - will depend on the BIOS which term it uses...

Re: WD Hard drive is not detected by MSI P6n SLI Platinum

That particular board does not need to have the drive jumpers (some have a software solution) changed since both the board and the drive are Sata 3 gb/s transfer rates compatible. They will work together without any changes.

Therefore, you need to look for the mentioned Bios setup menu for the "IDE MODE" to make sure it sees the drive as it is.

Yes, with XP normally (as mentioned), you do have to either slipstream the drivers as mentioned or load them at the F6 prompt and then you should be good to go.

Post back with questions concerns and Raptor_Pa is our hard drive guru, so he should be able to guide you through this issue.

Sorry you gave up. Might give it some time and try again to see if you can set it up differently. Anyway, thanks for posting back and have a great Week.
