hard drive not working with new motherboard but will work in 2nd computer

Ok, not sure if this should be in this forum or the motherboard forum because i'm not totally sure what the problem is.
Story is, motherboard died, unknown reason.
got a new processor and motherboard.
Installed it and worked fine,
hard drive wouldn't boot windows all of a sudden.
got the "boot to last known good config, boot to safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc etc etc" page
no matter which one i would choose the computer would reboot before the windows loading screen ever would come up.
rinse repeat, same outcome.
I've had to do repair installs of windows before when in a similiar situation so that the hard drive would work with the new components.
Whenever i would try to boot to windows installation cd,
before it would even get thru all the first inital loading stuff and come to the "recovery console" option page which is the first thing after loading,
it would give me a blue screen of death before it even got that far.
I don't have the stop codes and can't get to the computer right this second, but it said something about checking for possible virus infections and/or hardware changes i believe if i remember right (don't hold me to that).
So i hooked the hard drive up as a slave drive of sorts to a working computer of mine
did quite a few scans with different programs on that drive and none found any results of virus/malware/anything.
So I decided to get curious,
I stuck the hard drive in another computer and tried to do a repair install on that computer and it with thru flawlessly.
The hard drive is physically fine, and all the information is still intact.
So i'm thinking its not a problem with the hard drive alone anyways..
I've tried multiple settings of cable select, master, slave combinations. nothing will work on the original computer that the motherboard went out in. I can't get the windows cd to load at all on that original computer without it going to blue screen fairly quick.

Long story i know but i always think that the more details, the better in diagnosing the problem. I'm kinda thinking that it is something to do with the motherboard but I'm really not sure... any suggestions? please anyone.

Thanks in advance.

Re: hard drive not working with new motherboard but will work in 2nd computer

i know.. that's what i'm saying is that it won't let me do a repair install on the computer that i just changed out the motherboard in. whenever i go to boot to windows cd, during the inital loading process, it gives me a blue screen like i mentioned before. I can't do a repair with that computer for some reason. why is that?

Re: hard drive not working with new motherboard but will work in 2nd computer

the hard drive is IDE and i have it set up on cable select, and i've also tried master/slave settings as well with the same outcome. and it gives me the BSOD while it is booting to the windows cd during the inital loading screen, before it ever gets to the first interaction screen where you can choose to go to recovery console or not. before all that.

use master /slave
check the jumpers if wd drives are being used the jumper settings are different from most other drives

with it set as master, the computer freezes at the bios spalsh screen, with it set as cable select, it goes past all bios and POST features and acts like its about to boot but right before it gets to the windows loading screen, the computer restarts. It isn't the motherboard (atleast I don't see how it can be) because i've tried a different hard drive and it works perfectly. and also, i tried the hard drive (the one that i can't get to work with the new motherboard) in another computer and it booted up fine. so if the motherboard is good, and the hard drive is good, why won't the hard drive work with that motherboard?

please please help. this makes no sense to me.

please don't confuse my previous post where i said "it acts like its about to boot but right before it gets to the windows loading screen, the computer restarts" by 'windows loading screen' i meant the very first windows splash screen, not the log on screen. It gets to right before when you would normally see the splash screen. Just didn't want anyone to think i meant the log on screen.

I figured i'd try a different optical drive since nothing else has worked. Still no avail. Still can't boot into windows cd to do a repair install. I still get the BSOD stop error 0x0000007B (0xF8980524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) right when it is almost done loading all the stuff on the cd (right before you get to the recovery console option screen) i'm at a complete loss..
