Drive D:\ Missing After Hard Drive Erase

Hello Everyone,
I will make this brief to start with and no doubt will inadvertently leave out information that may be important for troubleshooting. Here goes:

I used KILLDISK on my hard drive (NTFS) last week and I can't set up XP now. I have used KILLDISK about 5 times in the past and never had a problem reinstalling Windows 95 or XP before now. Basically, the computer does not acknowledge drive D: , which is my DVD drive. I get messages such as:

"Not Ready Reading Drive D" , "Volume In Drive D Has no Label", "Fail on INT 24", "Boot From ATAPI CD-ROM: Failure" and the "Missing Operating System" message. I thought I could have solved the problem when I located and installed the 6 floppy XP Start up Disks. However, on reboot to drive D:\ from drive A:\ as I attempt to install my LEGAL Windows XP OS I have repeated failure messages. I understand boot order in BIOS and that's not the problem. Drive C:\ is not recognized either ("missing operating system" message). I only have drive A:\ with which to work with at this juncture.

Do I need a specific driver to get my Toshiba DVD to kick off? I thought XP startup took care of that. How can I get the computer to realize the DVD is physically there? XP installation will not go forward without it.. Do I need to partition my hard drive? ............... I am sincerely grateful for any suggestions that are offered! Many Thanks!

Re: Drive D:\ Missing After Hard Drive Erase

Oh, I just realized that this forum only supports Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, and Toshiba. I have a Quantum Fireball. Sorry. I will go somewhere else.

Re: Drive D:\ Missing After Hard Drive Erase

Quantum = Maxtor = Seagate.. LOL we support all drives. Problem sounds like either bad install disks, or the DVD has failed. Make sure all cables are tight on both the drive and Motherboard end.

Re: Drive D:\ Missing After Hard Drive Erase

Thank you for your reply raptor_pa. I think it may be a driver problem as C: drive is present now but I receive messages regarding my CD-ROM drives. CD-Roms are listed in BIOS and they list on startup but if I try to switch to D drive, messages are:

"No valid CDROM device drivers selected"
"No drives are attached, or drives are powered down. The device driver is not installed"
Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
Cheers,
littlebuddie
