Putting IDE HD in a SATA system?

OK experts... here is my Dilema,

I have a SONY VAIO, VGC-RB34G Desktop PC (Intel Pentium 4 Processor 540J, 512 MB RAM, 200 GB SATA Hard Drive, Dual Layer DVD+/-RW, DVD-ROM Drives.) Ha ha you think it's funny but thats not the dilema!

System now has 1GB RAM.

I just purchased a MAXTOR BASICS ATA/100 INTERNAL HARD DRIVE KIT.
This is a 300GB 16MB CACHE 7200RPM ATA/100 On the back is a picture of (what looks like) an IDE cable next to the drive it says "ATA INTERFACE CABLE"

I opened the PC case and there is (only one) IDE slot on the Mother Board and the cable goes to the 2 DVD drives.

Is there a converter cable or some way to put my new 300GB IDE drive into this SATA only machine?

OR am I just ignorant in this field and ATA means it's an SATA drive? (I think I made a joke)

My other option has its PROS/CONS, but I could always use the 300GB as an external USB drive. which...
PRO: Makes all the items stored on it portable.
CON: Makes it vulnerable to shock due to falling/dropping or theft.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: Putting IDE HD in a SATA system?

Options would be a PCI IDE card or SATA to IDE adapter for the end of one of your SATA cables. ATA generally means IDE tho now it is pprobably more correctly called PATA ( Parallel ATA)
