Moving Files from one hard drive to another

Normally, this is a straight forward thing, I know, but heres the problem

In the old PC, the power supply died. Instead of replacing the power supply, since the PC was 5 years old, my friend decided to just buy a new PC.

He called me, and asked if I could help him get his files, I said sure, no problem.

My question is, I can just take the old hard drive out of the old PC, and temporarily hook it up to the new PC just to move the files over, correct? Seems like a pretty straight forward solution, but I would just like to make sure that this will work.

Thanks for any and all help!

Re: Moving Files from one hard drive to another

technically, yes. But it also depends on which type of drived he has now, and which one his old computer has. In other words, is it SATA or IDE or both? Determining that will determine the next step. But, overall is a simple process.

The old hard drive is an IDE. The new drive is SATA.

You may also need to take ownership of the files to copy them... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
