Help with Manhattan Ultra ATA controller

Hello:

I have the following equipment:

- Windows XP SP3
- Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.2 Ghz processor
- 2 GB RAM
- Foxconn G31MV-K motherboard
- 1 HP CD Writer
- 1 HP DVD Writer
- 1 seagate 80 GB IDE HDD
- 1 WD WDC5000AAJB 500GB IDE HDD
- 1 Manhattan Ultra ATA/133 Controller PCI Card (installed a week ago).

The problem that I have is that I think (not 100% sure) that the recent installation of the Manhattan Ultra ATA/133 Controller PCI Card is causing my WD HDD to show errors.

Both of my burners are connected to the motherboard's internal IDE port and both hard disks to one of the PCI's card IDE connector.

I constantly get a beeping sound from my PC's internal speaker when I perform either write or read operations in my WD's HDD and the PCI card is plugged on the motherboard.

I ran Western Digital's WinDLG's quick and extended tests but both failed.

On the extended test I was given the option to repair the errors but I really don't know what the utility will do to my existing data.

I get the following error when I check Windows XP's Even Viewer:

"The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp"

Anyone has experience using this Manhattan PCI card?

Thanks and help is greatly appreciated,
Roberto

Re: Help with Manhattan Ultra ATA controller

Try moving the disk over to the internal IDE channel and re-run the diags. I tend to think it is the drive causing the issue, not the controller, if the controller I would expect to see errors on both drives since they are on the same port on the card. It sounds like a bad block, get your data off the HD while it is still functional. Copy important data to another drive, then re-run the diags. The repair should have no effect on existing data, but- if the drive is starting to fail, then you want to make sure youhave what you need in case it goes completely south during the process.

Re: Help with Manhattan Ultra ATA controller

Ok so I guess I figured out why the beep when I do heavy processor tasks (i.e. video conversion).

It's because the CPU's temp reaches 50oC after about 5 minutes but returns to normal (33oC on average) when the high demand task is over.

I did some temp monitoring while doing video conversion tasks.

This threshold is set on the BIOS and I guess I can change it to a higher temp value.

What do you think of this CPU's temp increase? I think it's normal isn't it?

I moved the disks to the motherboard's internal IDE channel and also removed the PCI card but I still get the hard disk error.

Does this mean that the WD hard disk is dying? If this is the case I need to backup my data ASAP.

I checked the HDD's warranty and it's still valid so I guess I can ask for a replacement.

Sounds like the HDD was affected when my old motherboard died a month ago. One capacitor got swollen and had to replace the whole thing. I used a lot my PC even when the capacitor was not longer alive.

Thanks
