EHD not recognized; Occasion computer freeze when connected
Well, I have two problems with my EHD right now.
The first problem is that my computer occasionally freezes whenever I plug my HD in. I can fix this by turning it off then on, but I'm just really bothered by this. The second problem is that my computer does not recognize it, giving me the USB Device Not Recognized error. My EHD is a Seagate Barracuda with NTFS format. |

Re: EHD not recognized; Occasion computer freeze when connected
OK, any idea what the model number of the actual drive is? Do you know if it a 7200.11 series drive? These drives had some firmware issues and woulod just go south. Does the drive fail everytime? If so you may need to remove the drive from the housing to verify if it is a 7200.11. If it is, tehn get the serial number from teh white label, go to seagate's site and check the serial number with their on-line application to see if it is one of the drives that could be affected by the firmware bug. If it is, contact Seagate tech support, they will repair the drive and return it with data intact if the issue is the firmware bug.

OK then the next step is to get the drive mounted internally in a desktop and run seagate's seatools against the drive short and long tests.

1) There is absolutely no way of opening my Tower. I've tried once, I've tried twice, I've confirmed it will never open without the use of drastic measures. 2) I have no more drive bays in my tower. Even though I've never opened my tower, I'm 100% that there is no more space. |

It doesn't need to be in a bay, just connected for testing.... There has to be some way to openit, they put everything in :)

Well yeah, I guess you're right about the "no Drive bay needed" thing.
BUT THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY OF OPENING THIS THING. EVEN THE COMPUTER TECHIE THAT I GO TO FOR HELP WITH COMPUTERS COULDN'T OPEN THIS SAFE OF A TOWER. IT FEELS LIKE IT WAS MADE TO BE SEALED SHUT. |

You can try it USB, but USB interfaces do not pass all the low level commands and protocols that may be needed, seatools will probably run OK on an external, if it passes tho the next step would be test_disk - which I have had mixed results with using USB.

Re: EHD not recognized; Occasion computer freeze when connected
OK download partition find and mount, scan the drive and see if it can find a partition and mount it. You can then copy your files off, or try test_disk as in this sticky Have you "lost" a hard drive, partition or files in your computer? to see if you can repair the partition table/mbr.

Re: EHD not recognized; Occasion computer freeze when connected
This is the point I was worried about above, is it really not seeing them, or is it failing because of the external USB interface not passing the commands correctly. Did test_disk identify the drive correctly by capacity?
