i need some hard drive help!!!

i just got a old Dell Dimension 4700. i took the hard drive out of my dimension 3000 to put in the 4700. well i opened the case up and found that the it only had one ide port and 3 sata ports and the only ide port was being used with the cd rom. i took the 40 wire cable out and replaced it with the 80 wire cable and tried hooking my cd-rom and the hard drive up on the same 80 wire cable. the computer came up with that it didn't have any hard drives connected. and the cd-rom wouldn't work either. but i have to have the cd-rom work and the hard drive so i can install a fresh copy of windows on it. HELP!!!

Re: i need some hard drive help!!!

The HD should be on the end connector and the Cd on the middle connector. The HD set as Master and the CD set as Slave. If you run a mix of Sata and Ide you will have to go into the Bios at Boot up to select Boot priority, so the comp knows which drive you want to boot to. Then select 1st boot, 2nd boot.

Re: i need some hard drive help!!!

Just for clarity, do you have any Sata drives presently hooked up?

Re: i need some hard drive help!!!

Just make sure as mentioned by Belfasteddie, that you deal with the jumpers on both drives. Then, go to the bios and make sure in the boot area that your boot order is set to:

CDRom - 1st
Floppy - 2nd
Hard Drive - 3rd

Then, check to make sure if you have a Hard Drive Priority, that the hard drive is listed FIRST in that area.
