Re: i want my files!
You need to take ownership, the files were crated by a user that existed on the old OS, and security permissions won't let you access them. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Re: i want my files!
The answer is maybe... shock damage can cause several different problems. Ummm how do you know the heads are moving? I assume this is a laptop, most laptop drives park the heads off the surface in a ramp, the shock can jam them in the ramp, it can also bend the spindle causing slow spin or platter wobble, if the machine was running then the heads could impact the platter surface causing damage to the heads or the platters. About the only DIY solution would be to mount the drive in another machine and try r-studio or getdataback and see if they can find your files, or if the disk will even mount. If there is physical damage it may not be recoverable without sending it to a recovery specialist. Starting a new thread, from teh list of topics, start new thread button near the top.

Re: i want my files!
OK, so try the recovery software, don't run the drive until you are ready to recover. Even though drives are not airtight, they have very good filters in the air exchange holes, when you opened the drive you allowed dust to enter the drive space. Load the recovery software on another machine, and then mount the drive and get the recovery done ASAP.

Re: i want my files!
I'm not sure where the zip lock idea came from :) no effect, maybe because drives ship in a bag that is sealed, but that is for antistatic protection. You can download the software - r-studo or getdataback. You will need another hard drive to connect it to. What is the make and model of the drive? You will need a PC with the same type of interface as this drive ( if IDE you will need a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter ). If the software won't work, you will need pro recovery, not something the local PC shop or big box electronics store with a VW out front can handle. Probably looking at somewhere in the $1200 to $1800 range. Google r-studio , they have a PDf manual you can read that is very thorough.
