old hard drive (still ok) not working with a new mobo
Hello,
I build a new rig based on a brand new Gigabyte EP45-UD3P rev A3, a new 500 Watt Antec PSU, and a Q6600 CPU. However the BIOS does not find my old IDE drive (Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB). The drive is ok because I use it in an external enclosure and connect it via USB to the same computer. I tried all combinations of jumpers and disabled/enabled all hard drive settings in the bios. I bought new SATA drive and it works perfectly. What to do? Bios Version F7, Date 01/13/2009 |

yes it does, forgot to mention that, the IDE drive works when connected as a external drive, but when I connect via IDE cable it is not recognized by the bios...

Re: old hard drive (still ok) not working with a new mobo
What IDE port is it on, have you tried another Molex connector, or at least verified the power on the molex is good? It does spin up when connected to the IDE port? Wasn't real clear on that from your answer. Try it alone on one of the IDE ports jumpered as master ( or if a WD then no jumper for master - no slave ) What is the make and model number of the drive?

Re: old hard drive (still ok) not working with a new mobo
It is a Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB - that is what it says on the drive. The board only has one IDE port. How do I check if it gets right amount of power. I tried the drive in all different combinations. Actually, there maybe a power issue with the board. I had one other IDE drive that I connected to the board and it burned! The bottom of the drive got extremely hot, formed a bump, to the point that smoke started coming out from it. But the drive I am using now seems to be doing fine except that it is not recognized? I think I should send the board for replacement....

Re: old hard drive (still ok) not working with a new mobo
The model number should start out ST followed by some numbers and letters. The 7200.10 designator is the family of drives, but there are lots of different models in there too.
That could definitely be a power issue- what is the make and model of the mother board? You would need a Volt-Ohm-Meter ( Digital multi meter) to check the voltages of the power connector - Yellow to black should be 12V red to black should be 5 volt. The power issue would probably not be the mother board, it would be the power supply. Drive power does not come through the board, the power connectors run directly to the power supply. Does the drive spin up when connected to the IDE cable and power?

Re: old hard drive (still ok) not working with a new mobo
yes it does spin...could the psu be not compatible...the working SATA drives are connected via the new connectors, actually I remember now that it was a different psu that caused the smoke, the one I am using now is a new one and should be fine...

Re: old hard drive (still ok) not working with a new mobo
Need answers here...
1) What is the model number of the drive 7200.10 is the family - model starts with ST##### 2) Make and model of mother board 3) Screen shot from disk management window with the drive connected 4) Download seatools, with the drive connected run that and see if it is found and then test the disk with seatools diagnostics. 5) How are the jumpers set for all devices on the IDE cable and which connector has the master device and which has the slave device (Slave should be on the middle connector nearest the mother board and master on the end connector )
