disk cannot defragment and chkdsk

hi,
i have sata 160 gb HD when i start defragment inbuilt winxp utility it show defragmention could not start. also when start checkdisk on any drive it show checkdisk unable to start and when i set startup checkdisk it show file system is raw and starts windows normally. however when i check the file system in my comp, system information it show file sytem is ntfs. my pc became very slow.
(i can access system only it become slower)

Open cmd. make sure you are in the right drive example drive "C".
Then type chkdsk /f answer yes on the question. After the process is finished you can defrag you drive.
Remember to do this on both drives if it the same message on both drives.
I did this with my USB drive. Worked like a charm.

no this also didn't help me i am still perusing same prob sartup checkdisk cannot perform will formatting could help?

Starnge issue, first thing I would do is download the bootable CDrom image for the hard drive manufacturer's test utility and verify if the drive has errors...
