Hard drive to external, password problems

I had to take out a hard drive from a laptop that stopped working. I can connect it via USB to my other laptop, but since I'm not running Windows from it I can't log in to the account on there, which means I can't access the files.

Both laptops are Toshibas and running Windows XP and the cord I'm using is a Vantec SATA/IDE to USB adapter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, there's a lot of stuff on this drive that I really need to get off.

Take ownership of the files.... The user permissions are set to the old install of windows. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Re: Hard drive to external, password problems

I can't figure out how to do that when I'm using it as an external. I can't boot from that hard drive, only use it as an external.

I also don't have the ability to burn a CD because my laptop CD driver is absolute crap.

Re: Hard drive to external, password problems

You can boot to the drive on the machine you are using right- the one it is connected to via USB? The drive should show in my computer, right click on it properties->security->advanced->owner select your user name check teh box to apply to sub directories and files, then OK your way back..... Make sure you are logged on with an administrator level account.

Re: Hard drive to external, password problems

There is no 'Security' option under Properties. The tabs I see across the top are General, AutoPlay, Tools, Hardware, Norton, Sharing, and Quota.

I am on the administrator account on the computer I'm using. I've tried making the drive shared from the root, but that doesn't seem to be working either.

Re: Hard drive to external, password problems

Read the article linked above... XP Home start in safe mode, XP Pro you have to turn off simple file sharing... sharing has no effect on local access...
