2 WD HD's fail on same system in 3-1/2 months

Hello, I moved this problem from Windows Vista Support:

Well, there's been a new development. It's morning for me and I don't work today because I worked the weekend. And the first thing I wanted to do today was to replace my Vipre AV with a trial version of ESET. Just to rule that out, and also in case that jcgriff2 guy decided to stop by . I never got that far because shortly after I awoke the computer it soon became inoperable. I quickly realized there was no hope of getting Windows back up this time, so I was back to the UBCD for another HD diagnostic run. This time after the quick test, it sited "Command Error 0132" and said to contact Western Digital.

This is the same diagnostic program that cited the same error for the original drive in this system. The original drive was about 5 weeks old when it failed, and now this drive is about 9 weeks old.

Did I just hit the Western Digital lottery or is there something else going on here?

-Rand

Info:
DLGDIAG 5.04f, Data Lifeguard Diagnostics sited "Command Errror", "Error/Status Code:0132".

Re: 2 WD HD's fail on same system in 3-1/2 months

According to WD's site the error code 132 implies the wrong version of the utility, the command wasn't understood. Make sure you have the correct version ( although not sure what the diff's may be, but worth verifying ) from this page http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?lang=en

Re: 2 WD HD's fail on same system in 3-1/2 months

Hi raptor_pa,
When the 1st drive seemed to of failed and had an error code of 132, I called WD and they, without hesitation, said, "Let's get your RMA started." This time I requested an RMA on their website siting the error code as the reason, and it was approved. Also, while on their RMA website page for that specific drive, they did ask that you download and use their diagnostic utility "Data Lifeguard 5.04f". And it is the same utility and version that I used.

Well that confirms that then LOL, sounds like you just lost teh WD lottery. Might also want to make sure all the case fans are working and the vents are good and clean to ensure maximum airflow.

Re: 2 WD HD's fail on same system in 3-1/2 months

I've only had this system up and running since mid-November, and it hasn't even gotten warm yet where I live. Also, the case has fans galore. Its an Antec Three Hundred and it has 3 120mm and 1 140mm fans. And I know it's not that dusty yet, but I do plan on blowing the whole thing out during the HD replacement.

But you know what I'm thinking... am I going to go through a 3rd HD failure before I find out I have a bad power supply or the mainboard is doing something wrong. I basically posed the same question to WD, but, other than the stock reply (read our forum on known issues with Vista, etc.), I haven't heard anything pertinent from them yet. I don't want to assume anything until I hear from them, but when you think about it... what's a couple of drive failures to them.

Re: 2 WD HD's fail on same system in 3-1/2 months

Yep, unfortunately hard drives are a commodity priced item now. With the higher capacities and dirt cheap prices ( I mean it was only 1996 - 1997 that a 1GB drive was selling for $1000 ) it is cheaper for the manufacturers to replace failed drives. It's a numbers game. I also think a lot of it is let's get this new drive reasonably stable and out to market, we'll fix it up as we go. Probably that is good news for the data recovery industry but bad news for the consumers. It's not just WD tho either LOL - I thik it is the industry as a whole!
