forgot HDD password? please help ?

I have acer travelmate 2680 laptop. I forgot my hdd password. I tried resetting cmos setting by removing cmos battery for 15 minutes. But it removed all of the bios settings but not the HDD password. Could anybody please tell me how to remove it or reset it. If I format my hard drive ..wud it help in that. I don’t have any data to save in it. It has windows vista home basic and I don’t have any disk for that. But I still have that product key. Could anybody please help me in this. Any suggestion wud be appreciated.
