Can't Access My C Drive/ Replacing Hard Drive

When I click on Local Disk (C:) drive, the following message comes up " Windows cannot find 'RECYCLER\S-2-1-49-100000485-100011671-5076.com'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click search"

Background info: I know my hard drive on my HP Pavilion DV5000 Laptop is failing, because I got a SMART Failure message, and I'm planning on getting it replaced on Tuesday, and I've already created the PC Recovery CD.

But my question is, will this problem continue once I replace to hard drive, and install the PC Recovery CD? That's what really worrying me right now. I don't want to have the same problem that I'm having now.

Thank you in advance.
Sorry for my very little knowledge about this stuff.

Re: Can't Access My C Drive/ Replacing Hard Drive

I would be surprised if it did. The error you are getting is not related to the physical drive so much as to the logical file system. Probably corruption somewhere int eh registry. A reinstall should clear it up. What is the SMART failure warning you are getting? Some of the SMART values can get out of parameters, and will generate a potential failure warning, but really aren't signs of a critical failure. I assume the recovery cd is a factory reinstall with windows installation on it.

The Smart failure is telling that my hard drive is damaged and will fail, and it needs to be replaced.

Any idea how I should go about fixing this? I also have the same problem on my
D: Drive. I'm so confused.

Re: Can't Access My C Drive/ Replacing Hard Drive

Smart monitors quite a few parameters of the drive, does it tell you which of the smart parameters is causing the warning? If not, there are several tools out there to read the smart parameters. Download the diagnostic utilities for your drive from teh manufacturer's website and see what it reports on the smart tests. They all have one available somewhere. You may need to pull the drives to see the manufacturer.

Re: Can't Access My C Drive/ Replacing Hard Drive

So is there any hope that once I replace my laptop's internal hard drive, and re install the PC Recovery, that this problem will go away. Because this problem just happened recently, like about yesterday, I realized I could no longer access my C drive.

Or is my laptop screwed?

Sorry, I suck at understanding any of this stuff.

Will doing a Microsoft System Restore help? I just found that option under the HP PC Recovery.

Re: Can't Access My C Drive/ Replacing Hard Drive

It's hard to say, knowing the smart params that are out of spec would help diagnose the issue... System restore won't help the smart issue, Before you get your new HD installed tho you need to verify that the HP recovery CD does in fact contain the OS installation, not just a bootable cd to launch the reinstall from teh HD. Let us know the results of the diag SMART tests.

The PC Recovery CD Creator says:
* Use the Recovery CDs/DVDs to reinstall your PC operating system and software programs back to the original factory settings. Only use this method of recovery when other ways of fixing your PC have failed.

I think that this my actually be a virus, call the recycler virus.
