Confused Installing a new HD

Hi, my name pretty much sums it up. My Acer 4720Z's HD has crashed for the second time since I bought it new in Dubai last August. Because it was purchased while I was living overseas, Acer considers my primary 1 year warranty to be void and they are only willing to honor a "travelers" warranty. Unfortunately that is only for 90 days and the second HD crash occured 2 weeks after the coverage expired.

They're not willing to repair to laptop again, so rather than using it as a very expensive doorstop, I am going to attempt to replace the HD myself. TriggerFinger has already mapped out where the culprit hides, so my question is; do I need to purchase a specific HD made soley for Acer Aspire 4720Z and if so, does anyone know where I'd find one? And if not, does anyone know where I'd whatever it is I'm looking for? All help much appreciated:)

Re: Installing a new HD

I wouldn't accept the Acer explanation. I would check and find if it is World wide as in the HP Warranty. My son turned up in Uk from Oz with his 5 month old HP Laptops Hard drive kaput. I rang their service line and the comp was picked up the following day and returned 10 days later. No question asked.
With regard to the type of hard drive. According to the specs its running 5400rpm disk, so when you replace it get a 7200rpm. Its probably a Sata, if it is I would suggest going to Ebay and have a look. Another place is:http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...NQZXJQYWdlPSY=
they have some of the best prices in Uk often better than Ebay. Good luck.
Tip , if you don't know how to load Vista, have a look on Youtube, they have quite a few demos under computer How-to.
I would be of a mind once it was up and running to get rid of it and buy a GOOD laptop.
