[SOLVED] SATA performance?
Just about to switch my hard drive from an IDE to SATA and was just wanting to see if anyone knew about what type of performance increase I could see.
I know there should be an air circulation boost due to the smaller cables, but what else? Machine is a Gateway E4100 with a P4 :4 CPU( 3.4GHz HT, 1GB PC3200 RAM). wAll responses appreciated. |

Re: SATA performance?
You are probably not going to like what I am going to say, but quite frankly, while there is a small performance boost, the difference isn't all that great. The main benefit you may see will quite likely come from large cache sizes of the newer drives. If you are expecting to see great performance differences and if the spin speed and cache of the drives is the same, then you are going to be rather disappointed, because there is not a great difference in performance. My opinion is yes, there is a difference, but very minimal if everything is equal.

Re: SATA performance?
Not a problem.
SATA has 16GB cache, IDE has 8GB.That will still be a plus. And there is the better circulation thing. Both drives are 7200rpm, so wasn't really holding out hopes for a "SuperPC" type of increase. And a little bit is always better than none, isn't it? |

Re: SATA performance?
The larger cache will make a difference somewhat, while being Sata, there is a small gain, so you won't regret buying the Sata. I just didn't want you to expect a grand improvement and then be disappointed. My advice is to buy the Sata.
