Cloning a stereo Hard drive through network.
Hi , i was hoping someone could answer a few questions. I have just got a second hand Phillips WACS7000 stereo. it has an 80gig 3.5" hard drive and can stream music from it wirelessley to a station in another room. I am slightly concerned that a lot of people seem to post on the net that the hard drive is the 1st thing to die and the unit will not boot up or play cds if this happens.
Problem 1 I wanted to clone the hard drive as phillips do not make the operating system or disk images available for if the worst should happen. This has been done by plenty of people on the net, but it is slightly complicated to get at the drive. As i do not want to dismantle the unit if it is working and risk destroying the whole thing, i was wondering if i could do a drive image either: 1/ Wirelessly 2/ Through a network cable (the unit can also be connected to a network to share music with a PC. This would then negate me having to rip the guts from the unit just to make a copy of the drive. Problem 2 The second problem is that it cannot be done through windows. If windows is involved anywhere along the cloning process, it removes a partition on the drive and will mean that my unit cannot rip CDs to the hard drive anymore. I read that there are a lot of cloning programmes that run from boot and do not use windows. So to recap, i was hoping for some advice as to whether there was a peice of software that can: 1/make an exact clone of a drive that is connected to the network without me having to butcher the unit 2/Is preferable free, as i am short now after buying the unit ![]() 3/DOES NOT run from or involve windows in any way 4/ Preferably has some kind of tutorial/good intructions/is easy to use as i like to know exactly what i am up to before i start. Or if you are able to offer instructions (more as to how to set up the hardware rather than use the software.) I know that this is asking a lot, or maybe the impossible, but i thought i would put it out there and see if there is a god bit of software and a fairly easy way to do it...... Regards, Jamie |

Re: Cloning a stereo Hard drive through network.
ultimate boot CD (free) is a linux based complilation .......... inside that boot disk are cloning tools ........ you will have to search which ones of the included tools can ....image a drive which is using "Standard (HFS) or UNIX File System (UFS) formats"
you see windows uses Fat32 or NTFS ....... thats why windows boogers things on you ......... you need to find out which file system is used by your stero hard drive ....... HFS or UFS is my "guess" you will then need to find which image programs can make images from those file systems

Re: Cloning a stereo Hard drive through network.
there are several listed here ............ which make their own bootable CD ............. thats what you want ........... then you dont need the Ultimate Boot CD to launch the image software

dont be in a hurry ................ you may have some bumps in the road here ........ what you are doing is not real common ......... so there is not alot of info to be gathered...... I KNOW this cd will boot the computer free of WINDOWS / and it has network support ...... thats how you will operate the image program from the PC accross the network and over to the stereo hard drive ............... what you want to do ,,,,,,,,,,is make an image file of the data on your stereo drive

Re: Cloning a stereo Hard drive through network.
I am thinking you will be making an image file of the stereo drive but storing it on a PC hard drive ........... cabled network is the way to go for this adventure
I think you will need what they call ........... a twoway network cable

Re: Cloning a stereo Hard drive through network.
For some reason I don't have an edit button on that last post, but reading it again to be more exact it should say
Reverse the orange and green pairs on one end of the cable. One end is ow-o-gw-b-bw-g-brw-br Other is gw-g-ow-b-bw-o-brw-br
