external hard drive.

Hi

ive been having a problem with my wd external usb hardrive, it seems like the usb port is not sending enough power to get it running.

ive tried updating the usb drivers, updating windows, removing the usb controllers then reinstalling them, using a usb cable with assissant power and many more things to try to fix the problem.

also the usb ports still work with my ipod, iphone, mouse, keyboard.

So if anyone has any info or help it would be much appreciated.

Re: external hard drive.

Is this a bus powered device? ie. No external power connector? If so is there a second USB plug on the data cable> The purpose of the second plug is for additional power from teh bus, if it is there, try it with both plugged in. If it has it's own power then the drive should be spinning - if it's not then we can work in that direction. What is the model name/number of the external?

Re: external hard drive.

Best thing to do is get a powered USB hub, one that has it's own power supply and plug into that. Drivers etc aren't going to increase the power output of the USB bus. Your OP says you tried a cable with aux power, I assume you mean the second USB conector on the cable? If you have tried the powered hub and it still didn't work, then there is a possibility the drive is failing, and the motor is pulling too much current to spin up.
