Question [SOLVED] Hard drive not reconized, but I can boot it

I am having issues with a Hitachi Deskstar not being reconized in my bios, but I can still get the drive to boot (bios says not reconized and I hit F1 and she boots). I assume its in the jumper settings but I'm spent... Any ideas???

What kind of drive Sata or IDE? How do you have it set up?

It is the original hard drive, an IDE... have changed jumper settings on hard drive but no luck. ribbon cable no luck. It did have an fine ribbon originaly, I think refered to as 80... It has a 40 ribbon in it now. In IDE slot primary.

Re: Hard drive not reconized, but I can boot it

For a hard drive, you need the 80 connector ribbon. (normally Blue to motherboard, gray in the middle connector, and black on the end where the master goes).

To be certain, do this:

Whatever is on that ribbon cable in the primary slot, set the hard drive to Master and put it on the end of the ribbon cable. Set any other drive on there to slave and put it on the middle connector.

If there are drives that were on that ribbon cable before, double check to make sure they are not set to Cable Select~~Your best shot is Master/Slave settings. You can not mix master/slave and cable select.

Re: Hard drive not reconized, but I can boot it

I damaged my 80 pin ribbon, so I'll need to pick one up. Maybe thats been the issue (I was robbing one computer to build another). I'll post back my finding.
Thanks

Re: Hard drive not reconized, but I can boot it

If it is jumpered correctly, the drive will still run on a 40 wire cable - but only at ATA33. If the drive is the only device on the cable it should be jumpered as master.

Now I suspect the jumpers themselves. I swaped them a good 25 times or more. I think I amy try to replace them as well.
I do know the hard drive shows 4 differant ways to use the jumpers and I have tried all 4 ways (16 heads, 15 heads, 32gb cup and auto spin disable). Regardless I will try to pick up new jumpers and a 80 pin ribbon.
It is a Hitachi deskstar model #
IC35L080AVVA07-0. I have search for info on this model also...

Not sure what the ATA33 is, but new ribbon just boots me into the bios, and by hitting F1 the drive boots into Windows.

Re: Hard drive not reconized, but I can boot it

Ok I finally figured it out. I did replace one of the jumpers, and in the Bios, I did see that it was reconizing a second hard drive. I disabled it and when I booted the machine it went right into windows... Not sure which of the 2 fixed it but its running: Thanks Guys
