I recently reformatted my computer using Killdisk free edition. Now when i go to format and install windows xp through the xp setup it says it won't recognize my hard drive. In the bios it still is recognized though. Is there anyway i can format the hard drive without the xp cd? Also i don't have a floppy drive installed at the moment so hopefully that isn't necessary. Any help would be great Thanks

Re: HD not recognized
and welcome to the ForumMost newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for installing on a SATA drive. . Go into the bios and check the "Sata Operation" setting, change it to "Raid Autodetect/ATA if it is not already. Now try to install XP ( Verbage will vary by manufacturer )

Re: HD not recognized
No need to format . . you did that with killdisc . . were you able to set the BIOS to handle the SATA controller as IDE?

Re: HD not recognized
errr sorry i didn't mean i reformatted my computer in my first post, i meant to say i just wiped it clean using killdisk. I couldn't find the bios setting that said that, but any sata settings were set to auto.
right now my hard drive is a clean slate as if newly bought. |

Re: HD not recognized
Then all you need do is install the operating system ( it will format early in the installation ) . . but first you have to get the SATA controller recognized. You can do that by loading the SATA drivers on a floppy and pressing F6 at the prompt, or by settings in the BIOS
What are the options in the SATA settings? . . the verbage will vary by manufacturer Floppy drives are dirt cheap if you have to go that route

Re: HD not recognized
The settings i have are:
NV IDE/SATA RAID function :enabled NV Serial-ATA 1: Enabled NV SATA 1 class code: auto NV SATA 1 Primary & secondary RAID: both enabled and the same for NV SATA 2 if i go into the RAID utility it has the hard drive enabled and bootable, but when i go into windows xp setup it still wont recognize it. is it possible the hd just failed? i was reading that they have like a 30-40% failure rate. Re: HD not recognized
I came upon another problem, theres no floppy drive on my laptop that i could copy the file onto but i managed to copy the files from a cd to the floppy using an ultimate boot disk thing. When i go into windows setup and hit f6 at the start it asks me to insert the disk into drive A: and hit enter. When i hit enter it won't read it.
I'm not positive it copied due to the ultimate boot disk dos format being very confusing. Is it possible to use a thumb drive to do any of this? |

Re: HD not recognized
Noe . . unfortuntely, to use the F6 to load the SATA drivers it has to be on a floppy . . XP will not use anything else.
You can us nlite to slipstream the SATA drivers into a new install cd . . http://www.nliteos.com/guide/ But first, try setting your BIOS to defaults, then chabge toi boot order to CD first and see if it will install

Re: HD not recognized

Getting pretty frustrated as i recently purchased a new videocard and the hd is fairly new heh. Do you guys have any other ideas or am I just out of luck if those thing don't work?

Re: HD not recognized
After resetting BIOS, did you then set it to boot first from CD?
When you say nlite did not work . . what exactly happened . . many of us use it all the time

Re: HD not recognized
I also reset the bios by taking out the battery, i can't find the cmos jumper so i didn't go that route. The cd was made fine, slipped in the SATA drivers. Still having the same problem of it not recognizing the hard drive.
I'm off at college so everyone has laptops and no floppy drives for me to load the drivers onto. So i guess my last option is to go back home and load them off my parents desktop? Running out of options heh. |

Re: HD not recognized
Did you use the right SATA drivers when you made the nLite cd? . . you should use the ones intended to be put on the floppy . . just intergrate into the nLite cd

Re: HD not recognized
well it works now... randomly
i used my roomates sata hd which by itself wasn't able to work. But i set it in a RAID array with mine and that worked. so i unplugged his, and just left mine in, deleted the array. Booted to xp cd and now i'm formatting it. Ridiculous after all that trouble it randomly decides it wants to work? ha ha |
