HDD crashes when downloading/xfering/saving/etc

Hope im posting this question to the right board, because i really think the problem is with my hdd

Let me explain the problem, what happens is that my brand new rig has a tendency to crash when downloading files, copying files, moving files or transferring files.

It crashes if i try to move a big file from my pc to another pc on the network, or if im downloading any large files from the net like game patches. it crashes when i run any torrent programs, crashes when any program i run tries to download anything, like self-installing programs.

I think the problem is with the hdd because of this, however! -- when i start the pc in safe mode (with networking) im able to transfer files without crashing.

heres some useless info: the pc crashes usually when the transfer/copy/cut/download is about 50% complete. When the pc crashes, whatever program im using at the time will stop responding, i'll try to move to start bar but it seems start bar is frozen too. After a few seconds the keyboard stops responding, and then the mouse is last to go -- i'll be able to move it around for a bit, uselessly, until finally it just freezes in place. The hdd activity light on the front of my case goes dead, no activity whatsoever, and the only way to fix the problem is to completely restart the pc.

Ive tried disabling all antivirus software and defrag software (bitdefender 09 and diskeeper 09), but to no avail.

here are my system specs:
mobo:
xfx geforce 8200
amd socket AM2+ DDR2 1066 Mhz PCI-E 2.0 Sata II

Processor:
AMD Phenom X4 quad 9650
4mb L2+L3 Cache
2.3 ghz

Memory:
Corsair DDR2 800 mhz
2 sticks, total of 2 gigs

Vid card:
Geforce 9500 GT
1GB 128bit ddr2
pci-e 2.0

PSU:
OCZ GameXStream 1010w

hdd:
Hitachi HDP725050GLA360
Sata II 465.76 GB (500 gig)

Re: HDD crashes when downloading/xfering/saving/etc

This is a network problem, not hard drive.

What do you use for network connection? (DialUp, DSL, cable, etc.)

You should try a 3rd-party Download Manager.

I use Star Downloader, both at work and home. Well worth the cost.

From their WEB page:
Quote:
Star Downloader is a download manager that accelerates your downloads by splitting the files into several parts and downloading them simultaneously. Download speeds are increased further by choosing the fastest mirror sites.

You may automatically resume broken downloads if your connection is lost or if your computer accidentally shuts down. With the scheduler, you can download files at certain times of the day. Star Downloader may also automatically connect to your ISP and hang-up upon completion of downloads.
The Resume feature is a god-send, but the download site does need to support this feature. Most do, but not all.

Network issues shouldn't cause a freeze on the PC, this one sounds like explorer. How much free space do you have on the drive, most files are first copied to temp files then to the ultimate location, so if it is a large file you need twice the file size free, plus normal overhead. It also could be a memory issue, try running memtest86 from the bootable ISO and see what it shows.

Re: HDD crashes when downloading/xfering/saving/etc

im sorry to say, altho i dont know much about what the problem could be im about 95% sure thats not the problem

If you read the whole post you'd see i crash when im transfering files on my own computer, i.e. moving a large file from my desktop to 'my pictures' folder

or moving a file from my computer to another computer on my network. This has nothing at all to do with what download program i use

its a 500 gig hdd, and i currently have 209 gigs free. The largest file i've tried to xfer/download/copy/move was perhaps 12 gigs in size.

I also dont think this could be the problem because i had the crashing problem way before i filled the hdd up. I crashed when moving my old documents onto the new hdd the very first time i powered the pc up. I had to restart about 4 times and move files onto my new hd in small increments, which took almost 2 days.

Re: HDD crashes when downloading/xfering/saving/etc

Try the memtest86 and rule out memory as the culprit.

Re: HDD crashes when downloading/xfering/saving/etc

Next step, download the HD manfacturer's diagnostic utility and run those tests.
