SATA HDD detection help

Hi all

System summary

ABIT NF7S V2 mobo
40g IDE HDD
120g SATA HDD (attached to onboard SATA)
1TB SATA HD (modded to SATA1) (Attached to PCI card)

My problem is this, I have just bought a new SATA HDD 1tb which my system recognised but would not format and utilise. So I have bought a PCI to 4 port SATA card to plug the new drive into. However every time I boot my PC the raid utility recognise that the new drive is there and hangs the boot process. If i unplug the SATA lead it boots, and then I can plug the SATA cable back in and off I go again, until I want to reboot.

Is there any way around this.

Thanks in advance.

Re: SATA HDD detection help

The drive may be bad . . what error message did you get when trying to format?

The drive is OK and has formatted fine. I have saved backup data to it.

When I boot with it plugged in the PC freezes at the raid part of the boot up sequence. If I unplug the drive the PC boots fine, I plug the drive in and I have 1TB of hard drive space to use.

I have disabled SATA in the BIOS.

I have also fromatted my 40gb hard drive and installed Vista hoping it would get rid of the raid settings, but still the same problem.

No, boot order as shown. Do I need to add a boot from SCSI??

My 1tb is an additional data drive, my operating system is on my 40gm IDE drive.

Re: SATA HDD detection help

the drive will probably be sata2,have you put a jumper on the back to limit it to sata150 which the m/board supports

Re: SATA HDD detection help

Is there an option in the bios config of the SATA card, the RAID selection screen to make the drives JBOD ( just a bunch of disks) or to make it a raid 0 (stripe) with just one disk? it almost sounds like it is trying to build a raid array and not finding additional drives it's locking up. I have encountered some cards that would not load with a single drive, they qwanted RAID or nothing, so you might want to research your card a bit more to make sure.

As it is the Samsung HDD it does not have the jumper, however I mounted the drive in a Dell machine and downgraded the drive to SATA1 usig software from Samsungs website.

I can't see one, but I am struggling at the moment as the driver disk that came with the card was damaged and I am awaiting a new one. It is SIl3114 and I have got the latest drivers from their website, but everytime I plug the drive in and boot it locks up on the SIl3112 motherboard SATA detection.

Anyone please help with this, it is driving me indane.

Thanks
