Recovering Files from Notebook HDD (error code 0142), 16hrs only 1 files found

Hi,

My Dell Inspiron 1420 went blue screen then boot with the word 'error loading operating system.' Did the diagnostic thing using dell's recovery cd and it say error code 0142. Tried to repair windows but it says don't have compatible OS.

Took out the HDD (it's a Seagate Momentus 5400.4 160GB) and use it as portable external HDD via USB. Was not able to format it til like a 17 hours ago with lots of plugging in and out, putting it back into my notebook trying to reinstall windows and crap for like 2days. Now I'm trying tp recover it using 'Recover My Files' but so far it says files found = 1 but the search has been running for 16hours+ with the searching at 58M out of 286M.

Not trying to freak out but I tried using 'Recover My Files' before on my other HDD and the amount of files found wouldn't be 1 at this rate. Just trying to save my documents and photos now. Yes, I did tick .jpg, .doc and those other extensions that I want to save.

Okay he's some weird thing I encounter and it's still there. Here's a print screen of my disk management. Drive L M & N is my dell's HDD where M is the drive where I'm trying to revocer my files. It's 160GB but there's this weird 110MB unallocated drive but I can't format or do whatever with it.

I'm afraid that not being able to format for days til suddenly it just let me to do it, is not right. So the main point here is, if I'm unable to recover my files. What's my option? Did I screw up somewhere?

Yes, now I'm running the recover formatted HDD. There's no data in it when I format it earlier just empty folder according to my explorer.

The data was probably still there, see what this comes up with... What are you using for the recovery software?

Using 'Recover My Files' now, from www.<--thatnamethere.com

Well, I'll update my progress when my scan is done. 34hrs elapsed 188M out of 286M still showing 1 files found. Heart skip a beat everytime I look at it.

Sounds a bit long.... may favorite is r-studio using file header search. I looked at the recover my files info, but didn't see if it is using a header check algorithm or not. If it is looking for file system pointers to your files, it may not pick up files that are there.

Wow R-studio gave me a sad error:

Information System 1/27/2009 6:15:10 PM Scan started for M:.
Error Disk 1/27/2009 6:15:33 PM Read disk M: at position 25894912 failed after 2 attempts. The device is not ready (21).
Error Disk 1/27/2009 6:15:33 PM Read disk M: at position 25829376 failed. Scan process terminated.
Information System 1/27/2009 6:15:33 PM Scan has been completed for M: in 22.781s

Will give it a try again when I'm free later. In a hurry so I might screwed up somewhere.

Sounds like the device is either not coming ready or is not staying ready. You might want to download seagates seatools diagnoctics for your drive and run those and see if it shows any errors...

Re: Recovering Files from Notebook HDD (error code 0142), 16hrs only 1 files found

Seatools I'm not able to run any of the test cept Short Generic and Long Generic. Passed the short generic but failed the long generic test. After few minutes running long generic, error on HDD starts showing and the error count went up to 30+ before it failed the test.

The rest of the test it says unavailable while my other seagate HDD passes all with flying colors.

Re: Recovering Files from Notebook HDD (error code 0142), 16hrs only 1 files found

This is definitely soundling like a physical error, however, I have seen testdisk have some issues on external drives. when doing any recovery, I always prefer to have the disk physically connected to the IDE or SATA port not USB or firewire.

Re: Recovering Files from Notebook HDD (error code 0142), 16hrs only 1 files found

That works, I'm currently recovering quite an amount of files now but recover my files is working like a snail. R-studio is hitting some cyclic redundancy right now but just to inform all the thread reader here raptor_pa's advice is working in my kind of prob. Cheers.
