Two IDE HDs on UDMA?

Hi to everyone around here!

Let's see if you are able to give me a hand with this...

I've got - or rather had - an AsRock motherboard which, as I expected, stopped working one day. No problem so far, as I actually knew it'd eventually happen. It'd been giving me many signs...

Therefore, I'm planning to move to an Asus, socket LGA 775. But I see now that new motherboards rarely have IDE connectors, and it turns out that I have two IDE hard drives that I certainly don't want to lose. Additionally, I have an IDE DVD burner...

However, most MBs have DMA or UDMA support, just as this P5N73-AM (my candidate, so far).

My question, then, is: can I just connect my two IDE HDs or my DVD buner to this available UDMA connector?

Oh, and do you think it'd be possible to boot XP from one of these disks?

I hope I've made myself clear.

Thanks in advanced!

Regards,

Martín

Re: Two IDE HDs on UDMA?

It looks like that board only has one IDE ( the UDMA port ) port, so it would only support two devices. You could add a PCI IDE card and add two more IDE ports. I don't see any reason you couldn't boot to one of these disks, you would probably not be able to boot the existing installation directly tho, the HAL will be different for the new MoBo processor combination so you will probably need to do a repair install at the very least. Also you will probably have to re-register your windows with MS since the hardware will have undergone "significant changes" read all the chips serials have changed LOL

Re: Two IDE HDs on UDMA?

Thanks a lot, raptor! This is my first time here, and I'm quite happy to know that there's knowledgable people in techsupport. Your reply is more than clear.

And the HAL issue... hadn't even thought about it yet!

Thans again, buddy!
