Re: External HD Power Recoup

Get the drive out of the enclosure, and connect it directly to the PC, then use the demos of r-studio or getdataback to see if the files are recoverable. If the files are there then you can purchase the license to do the recovery. both programs are less than $100 ( I think $59 and $79 actually.. ) Was the drive previously connected to the vista system? Or was it on a box with another OS?

Re: External HD Power Recoup

Was at the r-studio site last night and noticed the price for r-studio ntfs was 49.99, not sure if that's a sale or new regular price. http://www.data-recovery-software.net/

Re: External HD Power Recoup

Check for an IDE to sata adapter, relatively inexpensive and works better than USB cables and enclosures.

Re: External HD Power Recoup

You could check best buy or other similar stores, maybe even Satple's. If not check local computer stores. We buy them in bulk from onliine sources. Newegg should have them.

Re: External HD Power Recoup

There is a good possibility that the power spike from the wrong supply damaged the PCB of the drive. When you get it out of the case, look for any compromised components. The ideal case would be that the TVS ( transient Voltage supressor ) diodes did their job and blew out LOL. This is generally pretty obvious damage to the TVS's. If they worked correctly and were blown out, then you can simply unsolder them and remove them from teh PCB and if there is no other damage the drive should come up and spin. If it does do not consider the drive repaired, it is simply now in a state you can doa recovery and replace the drive. Even if you repalce the TVS's the drive would still not be one to trust with any critical data, the over voltage could have caused damage to other components like the preamp and head stack and might fail again at anytime.
Could you feel the drive spin up in the new housing when you applied power? And did it make any ticking noises if it did spin up? What is the make and model of the actual hard drive that is inside the enclosure.

Re: External HD Power Recoup

The model # is HM120JC. The drive is not turning. Best Buy did not have the adapter. I'm going to a computer repair store tomorrow.

Re: External HD Power Recoup

OK well the adaptor will tell the story if it is the housing or the hd itself. If the HD we'll hope the TVS diode blew out in which case we can remove it to get the drive spinning long wnough for a recovery. It will be unstable to try to use it long term without replacing the TVS, and it will void the warrantee, so the question is if your data is worth more than the cost of a replacement drive.

Re: External HD Power Recoup

I went to the local computer store and the IDE to SATA adapter (SATA side is too large). That was all they had. They recommended a data recovery company. www.datarecovery.net. Thoughts?

Re: External HD Power Recoup

If the drive is not spinning up, then professional recovery is about the only option, it still could be something simple tho, either the enclosure power is toast, or a TVS diode on the PCB of the drive. Did you get the drive out of the enclosrue? Look near the In what way was the SATA side too big? I've used a couple of types of adapters and never saw any that wouldn't fit on either a 3.5 or 2.5 inch drive. How have you checked the drive with at least the cover of the enclosure removed so you can feel the drive at power up to make sure it isn't spinning? Never heard anything one way or another on the vendor you mention, but they do seeem to pass the critical first test of in house clean rooms :)

Re: External HD Power Recoup

Keep in mind that the external drive was a Lacie drive and the drive inside was a samsung. I didn't think I could open the samsung unless it was in a clean room. Is that correct?
