Hard Disk upgrade - disk read error on boot
I have purchased a 400Gb hard disk to replace the 40Gb disk in my Dell Dimension 8200. I have Norton Ghost 12.0 and have used this to copy the content of the 40Gb disk to the new disk. I then remove the 40Gb disk and set the 400Gb jumpers to master. The system boots up fine and the 400Gb disk works without problem until I turn off or restart. When turning back on the system fails to boot and I get an error message "disk read error press control, alt, delete to restart". However, pressing control, alt, delete just results in the same error message when the pc tries to boot. I have tried recopying the 40Gb disk several times but each time I get the same problem. The system boots up fine the first time after the 400Gb disk has been set to master but not if the pc is rebooted. I have tried both removing the old disk and setting it as slave but still get the same problem. I have even had Symantec Tech Support copy the disk remotely for me several times just in case I am doing something wrong but still the same problem. The last time I copied the disk the the pc worked fine for several weeks with the 400Gb drive (without being turned off or restarted) but then failed to reboot when my wife restarted (I forgot to ask her not to!
). My bios is version A09 13/09/2002. Any ideas?

Download the above app and try see if it maybe picks up any errors. It fixes most hard drive problems |

Re: Hard Disk upgrade - disk read error on boot
Since you replaced the disk with another one, in the Boot area of the bios, are you sure that the disk you want to boot from is listed FIRST in any Boot PRIORITY setting?

Re: Hard Disk upgrade - disk read error on boot
Thanks for the suggestions. The 400Gb disk is now in as slave and works fine. The problem is that I can't boot from it when I set it as master whether I remove the 40Gb disk or have the 40Gb as slave. If I remove the 40Gb disk and set the 400 as master the bios seems to detect the change when I reboot and will show the 400 drive (which is a Hitachi) as device 0. The boot sequence is unchanged from the original settings but it doesn't seem to make any difference if I whichever way I change this.
