Can i recover my internal HDD?

Okay well a few weeks back my E-System 3085 Laptop broke (Screen displays nothing and VGA cable doesnt solve the problem), i have lot of files saved on there that i would like to revive. Im wondering if there is any way that you guys know of that i can get my files onto a Computer?

Thanks in advance, Louis.

Re: Can i recover my internal HDD?

Remove the drive from the laptop. Depending on if it is IDE or SATA and if the pc you are putting it in has SATA if needed then you will need the appropriate adapter. If the drive is still functional it should then be found on the system as a second drive. Best bet to keep it simple is to make sure the same OS type is loaded on both systems. Once you get it physically into the second machine if it doesn't come up for a simple file copy then we can look at recovery options.

Re: Can i recover my internal HDD?

raptor pa has the right idea. Most laptop drives are simply plugged in, and mostly to a standard laptop interface. Some computer shops will help you out with this if you are buying a new drive, but if that is not an option for you, go to cyberguys.com or a similar supplier and get an adaptor that will plug in to the back of your laptop drive and interface with either an IDE PATA connector on your dektop PC or a SATA connector is your computer is of a more recent vintage.

From there it should look like a normal drive. I had an external WDC USB drive fail on me and I had to rip apart the case and extract the hard disk. An adaptor from cyberguys came with both a data cable and power supply. It worked perfectly and I was able to transfer the contents of the entire drive over to another disk.

Re: Can i recover my internal HDD?

Nothing I can really identify in there, lookls like maybe a minipci card in the first. Not sure where the HD might be not at all familiar with the name E-Systems. It will be a 2.5 inch hard drive, could be in a slide in tray from the side, some models it is under the keyboard. Suggest you google 2.5 inch hard drive for a pic so you can identify it. Might be a bit tough to walk you through from a distance if you aren't all that familiar with PC components but we'll sure give it a shot.

Re: Can i recover my internal HDD?

You shouldn't have to tear the thing apart to get at the hard drive. Normally there is an access door, sometimes not obvious, that you pull on and the disk slides out. The back of the disk has pins that mate with the internals of the laptop. Mine looks like this:

As you can see, there is a subtle marking on the case and a slide door that screws down for security.

Re: Can i recover my internal HDD?

Oh well. Looks like you found your drive. Here's the next step if your desktop has a standard IDE connector

I found this one on Cables to go.

Re: Can i recover my internal HDD?

I don't know. SATA is relatively new. I don't know if your drive is a SATA drive or not. You might need to look at the specs to make sure.

Re: Can i recover my internal HDD?

It's a sata drive, easily hooked up to a desktop. Sata power cable from the power supply attaches to the longer "L" in the picture, and a sata data cable attaches to the shorter "L" in the picture. The data then plugs into a sata port on the motherboard, start the computer and the drive should be there. May have to take ownership to access files belonging to your username you used on the laptop is all.

Re: Can i recover my internal HDD?

You need to borrow or buy one somewhere. The laptop doesn't use a cable in the same way a desktop does, you plug the hard drive into the sata interface on a laptop, and plug the interface into the hard drive with a desktop. If that makes sense. You can pick one up anywhere. Here's an example. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812123186 They're all pretty much the same, but some are sata I and some sataII, that's different data transfer speeds, get sataII it'll work for either. Then there's different colours, lengths, and angles to the head (straight or 90 degree), doesn't matter what you get, as long as it plugs into the hard drive on one end and the motherboard on the other.

And once you get the drive recognized, here's how to take ownership, if required. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Re: Can i recover my internal HDD?

Yes, that will work. It turns your hard drive into an external usb hard drive. Notice there are 2 usb connectors to plug into the computer, this is so that there is enough power to run the drive inside the enclosure.
