Re: What is the best brand of external Harddrive?
Doby and Wrench97 both gave you some very very good advice. Forget the unimportant bickering in the other posts. The important thing, at this time, is to get your data off the drive and saved. The drive, and for that matter the entire computer, are just made up of stuff. Stuff can be replaced, your data can't. Priceless memories sure trump anything else. Once your pictures etc. are safe, then it's time to think about getting stuff working again. Focus on what really counts, and to that end, take it to a shop and get them to take what you need saved and put on dvd's or another drive, anything. They recommend taking it in somewhere, not because it's hard to do, but to avoid accidentally losing your data.

Re: What is the best brand of external Harddrive?
I would choose from a good brand like Seagate, Western Digital, LaCie etc. I have had one external die on me, and it was a Comstar, doubt I'd ever get another one of those. May have just be coincidence, all manufacturer's make a bad drive now and again and there's no way of predicting when it will fail. Sticking with the big names is always the best odds of getting a reliable drive.
