Help moving D: drive between two computers.
One of my computers died but luckily I had most of my data on the D: drive. I want to move it from the deceased computer (Sony Vaio) to replace the D: drive in my other computer (Compaq Presario). Is this easily doable, and are there anything in particular I need to do regarding jumpers, bios, etc. I am not that experienced w/ internal hardware on computers, but I can follow instructions pretty well.
Thanks in advance. Steve |

Re: Help moving D: drive between two computers.
When you move it make sure the drive already in there (if the master) is set to master with the jumpers and on the end of the ribbon cable. Set the new one to slave (the moved one) with the jumpers and put it on the middle of the ribbon cable. Should work like a charm.

Re: Help moving D: drive between two computers.
Thanks for the prompt reply. Both drives in the working computer are already set up as c: and d:, so I would just be replacing the d: with my other d:. I assume I wouldn't have to worry about any jumpers since that is the case. If this is not the case please let me know, otherwise I'll proceed.
Thanks again. |

Re: Help moving D: drive between two computers.
You do need to check that because one may be set as Cable Select instead of master or slave settings. Whatever the main drive is (cable select or Master/Slave) the other drive in that computer must have the same TYPE of jumper settings. If one is Cable Select, then the other must be cable select....If one is master, the other must be slave. The master or boot drive always goes on the end of the ribbon cable and is the master drive.
