Red Faced Help new hard drive issues please anyone!!!

Hey guys, I wonder if anyone can help?First things first here is my system as best as i can describe it.....
This Pc Was Built By Dell in 2005 but i added a few tweaks here goes:
Dell Dimension 5000
Intel Pentium 4,3.0 Ghz Processor
Graphics Card: ASUS EAH 3650 HDMI 256mb, to HDMI Pro 2 Range Cable, to 32" WSTFTHDTV.
(The cards cheap..i know but the Glaciator cooling fan is the same size as the tail rotors on an Apache Gunship....)
Hard Drive: Internal :80GB Maxtor 6y080mo,250GB WDC Caviar.
External: Lacie 250GB,Freeagent 320GB,Freeagent 500GB,Freeagent 1TB.(2.4TB Total)
Memory: 4X1GB Orca DDR2 Modules (Only 3GB detectable on my 32b Windows XP, Got 64 Bit Version But Don't Really Fancy backing Everything up.)
D-Link Air Plus DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.B)
Odds & Sods: USB Audio with full 7.1 Surround Sound.

Now I have windows installed on both sata hard drives and i have the western digital caviar set as primary,
i can access most things on the maxtor through my computer (just not the desktop folders and shortcuts),
which is fine as i can turn off my 250gb drive via bios and my 80gb will boot up, allowing me to access it all.
Now i just bought a 250gb hitachi Deskstar brand new which is a sata as well,
now I don't know what i'm doing wrong
but no matter what combination i put the drive in (whether swapping it for my 80gb or my 250 gb)
i cannot seem to get my pc to detect it,
i have even put in my windows sp3 recovery disk and tried to boot off rom drive
but it gets so far then says it cannot continue cos no drive is detected,
i have also had no bootable disk found or detected,
my pc is in a large desk and because of all the wires hubs and what nots i have attatched to it,
it is very painstaking to access the inside of my pc and by moving it in and out, connecting and unconnecting wires i am going out of my tiny mind,
the new drive needs to be formatted and partitioned and an operating system needs to be installed on it,
I bought a docking station so i can have it as external
but my pc doesn't detect it in docking station without O.S,
please can someone, anyone help by giving me a clear guide or description i can print out and follow so i do the least amount of work, simple trial and error is mind buckling for my limited abilities
I am honestly at my wits end and would love to have this running before my birthday in December,
any help much appreciated.

Re: Help new hard drive issues please anyone!!!

Have you tried downloading the drive manufacturer's utility and then trying to get that to recognize, partition, and format the drive?

Re: Help new hard drive issues please anyone!!!

The one on CD is not 3mb if it is the one I saw. I would go ahed and download it on a cd and give that a try. Be sure you have the CD in the boot sequence so it boots to the cd.

Re: Help new hard drive issues please anyone!!!

I still have a problem, just to remind of my hardware,I have:
80GB Maxtor (got this with pc from dell contains boot drivers to start pc, This was sata 0, but I have now connected it to a external usb dock, & as far as I can tell device is detected as location 0)
250GB wdc (I bought this ages ago works as sata 1, with 80GB maxtor at sata 0, I don't think it has boot on it and needs to be paired with maxtor,I have moved this drive to sata 0 port internal as the OS is all working and lets me use internet), windows detects this now at location 1.
250GB hitachi (this the new one I am having trouble with, it is now inside PC at sata port 1, I had to use the external dock for maxtor so as I can have all 3 drives connected).
Now with these settings windows still does not detect the hitachi drive so it is not possible to do anything with it,(I managed to fix my floppy drive by the way while trying to fix hitachi problem, I came across floppy settings & found out that the drive was not enabled, it works now, but I still have the cd rom I made with drive fitness test on, which works but doesn't detect any drives even my own origional ones).
putting my system together this way is the best result as far as fixing this problem I can think of as it is the only way that everything works except the hitachi drive.
Now you have an idea how my system is put together, can you maybe advise why drive is not working, it is a brand new one.Thanks.

Re: Help new hard drive issues please anyone!!!

I have run the DFT now with the CD image in BIOS & with the floppy mounted image in both cases DFT does not detect any drives at all, is there another way to get windows to recognize the hitachi drive as it detects all my other hardware? Thanks in advance, at least I now know that it is not boot sequence options, it is just getting windows to recognize this drive.

Re: Help new hard drive issues please anyone!!!

Now I have tried everything, for my Pc to work I need my OS which is the WDC 250GB on sata 2 at end of chain, I have had to set usb dock sata bridge which is maxtor 80GB as first position on boot order, otherwise I can't start windows, & the new hitachi 250GB is at sata 0, so my boot sequence is USB drive first, Then sata onboard drives, then cd rom third, then finally diskett floppy drive. In drives option all drives are turned on, for drive sata 2 the description reads wdc wd2500 e.t.c, for sata 0 description reads (unknown), In windows drive 0 is not detected at all. I am stumped. Please somebody tell me there is light at the end of this tunnel.

Re: Help new hard drive issues please anyone!!!

Frankly, I would not set the usb as first boot device. Here are some issues you might want to double check in trying to get this drive to work. I would set it up "properly" or the "standard setup" and see if you can get it going. Suggestions:

Give these things a try:
  • In the bios, you should have the Sata set in IDE mode, do you?

  • In the Bios, you should have the Sata options enabled, do you?

  • When you start to load the OS, did you load the Sata drivers at the F6 prompt, you should?

  • Are you certain you have the Sata hooked to the correct connection on the motherboard?

  • Do you have the Bios set to boot as follows:

    CDRom - 1st
    Floppy - 2nd
    Hard Drive - 3rd
  • Do you have the Hard Drive Priority in the Boot area set with the Sata listed FIRST?

Give these a try and see what happens.

Re: Help new hard drive issues please anyone!!!

Thank you I know my setup is a mess but I do not have boot up on my wdc, but it does contain my OS, the maxtor has boot up, but the os is old out of date and full of data, so I can't format or re-up the os, the usb hdd I refer to is a docking station with my maxtor in it just used to boot up windows, are you suggesting using the windows xp cd to boot windows up and leave the maxtor out of the situation, cos as I said there is no boot up on wdc & the hitachi is blank (new).
