Seagate 1TB Sata disk read error
Hi All!
Got a disk read error when i turned on my pc a couple of days ago, on both my seagate barracuda 1TB Sata hd's, cannot load windows on neither hd. Ive made no updates or changes before shutting it down the day before the error and the error appeared on both hd's simultaneously Luckily ive still kept my maxtor 300 GB hd, and when i load windows from it, both my seagate hd's seems untouched. Everything is in order and i can read/write on the hd's so the Mobo must be fine since the smaller maxtor sata disk works fine I tried reinstalling and upgrading win xp home from my MS cd but when restarting in dos it still cannot detect the hd's Currently im scanning the primary seagate 1TB hd with seatools making a long generic test, it failed the other test. When its through im gonna make a iso cd with seatools and try testing in dos mode I cant really see a solution to this problem, so if any of you could recommend some actions or come up with the solution it'll be greatly appreciated Thnx in advance |

Re: Seagate 1TB Sata disk read error
The DOS mode test might be best at this point. Let me ask you, with both those disks only in the computer (unplug the IDE for now), is there any way you can get in to safe mode? If you can, then do a system restore.
Can you see the drives in the bios? Have you tried with using only one Sata disk and unplugging the other one? (that is assuming you don't have raid set up) Also, if you can enter the bios setup menu, if there is a boot option for Hard Drive Priority, then make sure the drive you want to boot from is listed first.

Re: Seagate 1TB Sata disk read error
Hi thank you for your answer
With the generic long test soon finishing, i can tell you that i have only got sata disks in the system and 2 x plextor dvd ide drives. When i got the disk read failure i tried booting with the primary and the secondary seagate hd, but neither lets me get past the disk read failure so i can press F8. My Mobo is an older one, Asus A7V8X which havent got any options regarding sata drives, so ive been using Raid to setup my sata drives, only my plextor dvd ide drives can be seen in the bios. Now i cant exactly choose to boot from my sata drives, i can however set the bios to boot from another device, which is not floppy or dvd but the hd ive currently chosen as my boot drive. Thank you so much for your answer, it really would be strange though if both my new seagate drives have gotten the same error simultaneously, the mobo seems fine since my maxtor sata drive havent got any problems, this problem is driving me nuts. I might scan my harddrive for virus as well. |

Re: Seagate 1TB Sata disk read error
Possible Issue; The newer drives are all Sata II. If you have a Sata I compliant motherboard (older ones have this), then some (not all) Sata drives have a little jumper on the back that you must set to make it Sata I compliant. Give that a look and (have to be gone a bit) when I get back later today, will try to take a look at your motherboard manual online.
What raid are you running? (0, 1, etc)

Re: Seagate 1TB Sata disk read error
Just checking, did you load the SAta drivers at the F6 prompt, or don't you get that far?

Re: Seagate 1TB Sata disk read error
Hi!
I did press F6 but still the program was unable to locate any drives, even though both the maxtor and seagate harddrive show up when booting, the seagate harddrive gives a disk read error. For an hour ago i did a seatools test both long and short and it passed both. I will try to install win xp again tomorrow Thanks |

Re: Seagate 1TB Sata disk read error
Just be sure you have the raid drivers ready at the F6 prompt for it to work properly. Good luck and let us know what happens.
