Losing Disk Space. Need Assistance

Hey all..i have 10gb on my C: drive and this started a few days ago when i realized i had about less than 100mb on the drive and just like every newbie i started deleting programs i dont use anymore.. i freed up some space but lost it all again..i did the disk clean up and i decreased my IE temp space to 50mb from 380mb..i got treesize and found out that my i have 1gb worth of temp files. i used CCleaner but it only freed up 50mb..so im not sure what to do about that.. also under documents and settings i have two local settings>application data>microsoft which is 1gb each..i have no idea why or if its safe to delete ..and even if i get rid of these stuff and free up space how can i make sure i dont lose all that space within the next day? any help would be great thanks.

Re: Losing Disk Space. Need Assistance

if your running with no problems
turn off system restore
then create a new restore point
defrag and check how much space you have
you need to keep 15% free space at all times if you fill up the drive you are likely to lose access to it and have to reformat

My System

Re: Losing Disk Space. Need Assistance

Hi. . .

You should check on your system page file to see if it can be reduced in size temporarily. Check the size via cmd/DOS for now - it is located at c:\pagefile.sys - also look for hiberfil.sys -
START | run | type cmd - this command should bring them up:
Code:
dir c:\*.sys /a
See if you can run msinfo32 and save as an NFO file - go into SAFEMODE if you can't run any programs w/output under normal boot.
START | Run | type msinfo32 & hit enter | when complete save it as an NFO file (default file extension - you'll see it when you go to save it)

Zip it up and attach to a post.

To see the files in the mail directories - from the cmd/DOS prompt (to paste into the DOS screen, right-click near the top, select Edit, select Paste):
Code:
dir "%localappdata%\microsoft\messenger\*.*" /a /s | clip
Now bring up a notepad and paste. Look at info before posting - it is your email address. Change it b/4 posting any of it.

Now for system restore - try these commands from the DOS prompt. They work in Vista and most XP systems, dependant on whether you have the executable file or not - Run 1 at a time, paste it into notepad.
Code:
vssadmin list shadowstorage | clip
Code:
vssadmin list shadows | clip
I was also curious about what disk management had to say about the drive - is it reported healthy and at > 99% capacity? Had you been getting warning messages before the last week or so?

Regards. . .

Re: Losing Disk Space. Need Assistance

hey..i have no idea what the numbers mean for the hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys these are the numbers 267,964,416 hiberfil.sys and
402,653,184 pagefile.sys. the command for mail directories doesnt work is says 'clip' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. tried w/o 'clip' it says syntax command incorrect. For the shadowstorage it says:

vssadmin list shadows [/set={shadow copy set guid}]
list all shadow copies in the system, grouped by shadow copy set id
vssadmind list writers
list all writers in the system
vssadmind list providers
list all currently installed shadow copy provies

it just says those stuff but doesnt list anything.

for list shadows it says no shadow copies present in the system.

for disk management its all stated as healthy i currently have 7% free on C: drive.

i also have another issue..whenever i open 'my computer' it hangs and i'll have to use ctrl+alt delete to cancel it..so i've been accessing my files through run..could this problem be related to my space issue. Also, when i deleted some of those files in the messenger that dai asked me to remove, in treesize there were some that were big in size but when i explore all the folders' size were 0 bytes. anyways thats where i got my 7% of space from.

i've only lost about 40mb since i last posted which im guessing went to the internet temp files. but just wondering what happened to the rest of my space. i've uploaded the nfo file. hope thats enough to shed some light on the problem. oh and i didnt get any warning messages. thanks.

hiberfil.sys = 268mb - this is the file used for system hibernation & contains power configuration settings

pagefile.sys = 403mb - this is your page file (virtual memory - swap file - physical/virtual memory address conversion)

The hiberfil.sys ~ installed RAM + ; page file usually ~ 1.5x RAM
These indicates 256mb RAM installed; msinfo32 affirms. I would advise that you look into a RAM upgrade. 256mb is not enough to run the installed programs that you have - and your system will slow to a crawl as it eats virtual memory (page file).

The "clip" did not work b/c the Clip system service is disabled - not a problem, though.
Code:
ClipBook	ClipSrv	Stopped	Disabled	Own Process

	c:\windows\system32\clipsrv.exe	Normal	LocalSystem	0

The syntax of the command itself was incorrect as there is no %localappdata% environment variable in XP - I use it in Vista. Apologies about that. The variable is = "c:\D & C\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\application data" - just a little easier if you have to type it. Let's try again w/ hardcoding from your screenshot:

Code:
dir "c:\documents and settings\muralli\Local Settings\application data\microsoft\messenger\*.*" /a /s > "c:\documents and settings\muralli\documents\msmsg-11-11-08.txt"
Regarding your system "hanging" on My Computer - does it do this in SAFEMODE? Boot into SAFEMODE and see. Does it hang if the connection to the Internet is OFF? Unplug/disconnect Internet connection and test that as well.

A few more items that I would like to get from you, please:

- AutoRuns ARN file - Click HERE and RUN the Microsoft SysInternals Autoruns exe file. A viewer will come up - allow it a few moments to scan (status - bottom-left). When complete, save it as an ARN (default) file.

- Event Viewer Application and System logs - go into the Event Viewer (START | Run | type eventvwr.msc - hit enter). Go into the app log - save it as an EVT file (default file extension should appear - EVT). Then go into the system log and save as EVT file.

- dxdiag report - START | Run | type cmd | @ black DOS screen type dxdiag - hit enter. Save as a text file

Please zip the AutoRuns ARN file, the 2 EVT files, the dxdiag text file and the MSN Messenger directory text file up and attach to your next post.

Regards. . .
