why did one of my seagate hdd turn everything to .ink?

Hello

I tried searching the forum before posting but couldn't find anything relating to my problem.

the other day, i tried to turn on my pc. it didn't turn on. it worked fine the day before, so i pulled everything out and tested everything. i haven't installed any new programs or hardware, but once i took out one of my old hdd (there is two in the box) the pc turned on again and it worked.

when i replugged in the hdd that was causing the problem, the pc turned on again but all the files had turned to unopenable .ink files.

the hdd is about 4 years old. it's a secondary drive, no os just media storage. i run win xp.

if someone could shed some light on what this was caused by would be really helpful.

has this happened to you?

do you know what caused it?

what would you do?

Thank you all for reading.
