External Hard Drive Won't Stay Mounted

Greetings,
I have an odd problem and can't find much on the web about it. I have a Velocity Micro with two hard drives running Vista, and an external hard drive (Prolific PL3907 232 Gb). I leave the external hard drive connected as it contains my backups, syncs etc. all scheduled for different times. This has been fine for 9 months.

Now suddenly I notice the external hard drive unmounting itself. I looked back through the Event Viewer and noticed this error:

The device, \Device\Sbp2\Prolific PL3507 Combo Device&(1394-ATAPI rev1.10)&0&0050770e_00071002_Instance00, did not respond within the timeout period.

I can remount the drive simply by turning it on and off, although sometimes I have to more than once. What's going on here? I haven't made any significant changes to the computer. I've left a software CD-ROM in that drive for a few weeks as I've used it, so perhaps that's it...or perhaps the USB cable, or the drive itself is going bad? The only clue Microsoft gives me is "Event ID 9" that I copied above.
