Dirty Shutdown Flag [Moved from Vista]
I have a dirty shutdown flag so everytime I boot, I go into a chkdsk before the login screen. Everytime I scan, the dirty shutdown flag still stays. It keeps happening everytime I boot. How do I fix it.

Re: Dirty Shutdown Flag
Still the same problem..
Actually, now it just goes to the Startup Repair prompt all the time. I tried running Startup Repair to try and make it go away. It said that it was attempting to fix disk errors but the window just closed. Also, I just updated my computer but Vista SP1 keeps failing. A lot of other security updates failed as well. |

Re: Dirty Shutdown Flag
Hi, not looking good, you might like to run your HDD manufacturers diagnostic on that drive it looks like it may have failed. Maybe a mod could move your post to the hardware forum.

Re: Dirty Shutdown Flag
Jenaes suggestion to run drive diagnostics is a good one!
Depending on the Brand of the drive . . Samsung http://www.samsung.com/global/busine...ort_HUTIL.html Seagate/Maxtor/Quantum http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/sup...oads/seatools/ Western Digital http://support.wdc.com/download/ IBM/Hitachi http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT fujitsu/Seimens http://www.fcpa.fujitsu.com/download...es/#diagnostic IBM/Hitachi http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT

Re: Dirty Shutdown Flag
It would be the Brand of the Hard Drive . . not the pc. If you don't know the brand, try the Seagate diagnostics . . they work on most drives

Re: Dirty Shutdown Flag [Moved from Vista]
Moved to hardware per OP's request.
Don't run a diagnostic utility that's not suited for your drive. If you can still get into Vista then run the device manager : control panel => system and maintenance => system => device manager. Expand disk drives and give us the model ID for your drive. This will tell us the brand and model of the hard drive. While you're there tell us if there's any flagged device (red or yellow icon) in the device manager. Then create the proper diagnostic CD for your drive (preferably the DOS bootable version) following this site's instructions. What's the exact model of your HP laptop ? Re: Dirty Shutdown Flag [Moved from Vista]
It's a Western Digital drive : http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=264
Use this utility : Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD). Follow the instructions to create the bootable CD and run the Extended test. If you can I would backup your personal data on an external drive before you run the test, if the drive is physically damaged there are risks of data loss. |

Re: Dirty Shutdown Flag [Moved from Vista]
You need to boot the computer on the CD, it's not meant to be started from within Windows. Repeatedly press del at startup (or look for some "press xx to enter setup" message if del doesn't work) to access the BIOS configuration utility. Change the boot order priority to CD-rom first, save and exit. The computer will restart and wil boot on the diagnostic CD.
