Hi. OMG I need help before I go insane!!! I have just been given a DELL XPS 600. All there but the HDD. I bought a WD500 to install windows XP Home SP3 and have the following issue. I have connected everything the way it should, the BIOS recognizes the drive, I've reduced the drive to 139GB (i think) so that windows can install on it. When I put the XP disc in, it goes through the checking computers hardware screen and install basic drivers. THEN. It tells me there's no HDD. I've gotta be doing something wrong. I can add the HDD to this system with this HDD in and it finds it. I drop this HDD out and even this system can't see it. I'm at a complete loss now. Please help. I can provide any info required. Cheers Cris |

Re: Help!!!!!!!
Hi,
Welcome to TSF. You may needto install a SATA driver during XP install. It will ask you to press F6 to install. You can get the driver from the Dell site and put it on a floppy. http://support.dell.com/support/down...&catid=&impid= Paul

Re: Help!!!!!!!
Hi Paul. I'm downloading them now. Do you think I can upload them to the Dell with a flashdrive? I don't have a floppy on this system. Also, I haven't had the F6 request either. Is there another way of doing it?

Re: Help!!!!!!!
As far as I know XP wants to see a floppy. The F6 comment will be across the bottom
asking if you need to add any third party drivers. You can slipstream the driver into the XP install CD. "nLite" is a good utility for this. Paul

You can slipstream Windows XP + Sata drivers... http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How-To--Slipstream-your-XP-installation This way you will not be prompted to provide Setup with SATA drivers because they are alrady on CD... Hope this will help you mate... Keep us posted... |

Re: Help!!!!!!!
Most Dell BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the bios and check the "Sata Operation" setting, change it to "Raid Autodetect/ATA . . The XP Reinstallation cd should recognize the drive after that.
Are you using the Dell Reinstallation CD?

Re: Help!!!!!!!
Hi. I'm using a standard windows XP disk for the install. I was given just the tower and nothing else (docs, disks etc). Will try to streamline windows. The bios only allows SATA on, off or RAID on but as I'm only using the one HDD there shoud be no need for RAID right??

Re: Help!!!!!!!
Hi guys, ok I put the HDD on this system and uploaded these drivers and installed windows no problem. I downloaded the drivers from Dell and have now come across a new problem. I'm now getting the message "file textsetup.oem caused an unexpected error (1024) at line 1747 in d:\xpsp\base\boot\setup\owmdisk.c."
Any ideas? I can't install nLite on this system for some strange reason. I've tried several times now. Shame really as that seems the best route to take. Oh and my bios is A02. Could that have anything to do with it? If so, how do I upgrade it? I've downloaded A11 but can't see how to get it on my system as it's on the desktop of this one right now. |
