Upgrading Hard drives

My PC is fitted with a master and a slave hard drive. The slave hard drive is 80G and is full. I have replaced it with a 320G and it operates correctly. I have now installed the old 80G drive into a portable hard drive box. The PC recognizes the portable drive but keeps on wanting me to format the portable drive. It will not let me access any of the data that is already on it. If I reformat the portable HD I loose all the data which is not an acceptable option. I do not have enough room on the master drive to re install the 80G, copy the data and then install the 320G drive and copy it back. Any help that can be provided would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Archer

Re: Upgrading Hard drives

Thanks for the fast response. When I click the drive properties it comes up as a full drive of unknown 0 bytes and it does not show all the necessary tabs required to take ownership. When I check properties on the master and slave drive in the PC that are operating correctly all the drive data is displayed including all the tabs necessary to take ownership.
Thanks

Re: Upgrading Hard drives

Yes, logged in with full admin rights. Tried the ortable hard drive on a lap top that also runs Xp. Same result. Recognises the drive and shows it on explorer. system hardware says it is operating correctly, but keeps on wanting you to re-format before you can do anything with it. It is as if it is seeing it as a new hard drive

Re: Upgrading Hard drives

Have you "lost" a hard drive, partition or files in your computer?
