Hello all,
I've recently tried to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop from a 120GB hard drive to a 320GB Western Digital drive. I used Acronis’ True Image software to clone my original drive to the new one and everything seemed to work as expected. After I shut down at the end of process, I inserted the new drive into my laptop and was greeted by the following message: "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this" It gives me a few different options as to how to start Windows (last good known configuration/safe mode etc.) but regardless of which one I choose – the next screen is a blue screen of doom saying "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to your computer". I have no other option but to turn it off. So I tried sticking my original HDD back in and booted up again and it started normally (thank Superman!) but when I attached the new HDD back into the caddy and tried connecting it back up to the laptop, although it was recognised as a new disc in My Computer, it didn’t come up in Disk Management or in Acronis’ software. I am quite happy to wipe the new HDD clean and try the whole process again, but as it doesn’t get recognised by Acronis, I have no idea how to do this. As I say, it’s a XP 6400 laptop which I’ve had for a couple of years with no other discernible problems up to this point bar a couple of mild outbreaks of malwaria. If any one can help in any way I’d be very thankful. All suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot. |

Re: HDD blue screen failure after upgrade
I do think it would be worthwhile to try to clone it again. There are just some times that a clone is not successful for some odd reason or such. Another option you might want to consider if you can't get the Acronis to work (could there be an acronis fault or program error?) is using XXClone.
This is a free program and works quite well to do something like this. Althought Acronis is the king of these things, some times something just does not work in certain situations. Anyhow, here are links if you wish to consider XXClone. BTW, be sure to use the cool tools option if you want XXClone to boot the same as your old drive. XXClone and if you need any information about this program then read the XXclone Tutorial

Hi Tumbleweed,
Thanks for your advice. I've read the XXClone tutorial and it seems pretty idiot proof (not tempting fate!) so I'll give it a go and cross fingers/touch wood/avoid black cats etc. and hope for the best. Cheers. |
