I have had this external harddrive for a couple of years and lately it has been failing to write to system folders(why there are system folders in one of my extra harddrives Im not sure but...). I dont know what the problem is, could someone please help me?

Re: External Harddrive Is Failing to write stuff

You have to be more specific. What exactly are you trying to do, and are you getting any error messages? If yes, what is the exact error message?
Also check in your event viewer (it's in control panel (classic view), administrative tools). See any errors related to this in the system log?

Hear any strange sounds like clicking or screeching from the drive? (I'm asking in case it's a hardware problem so we can rule it out) If yes, stop and get back to us.
If not, you can try running chkdsk to check the consistency of the drive. Sometimes logical errors in the file system will display symptoms like you mention (unable to write to certain folders). Click start, (all) programs, accessories, command prompt. Then type
chkdsk x:
where x is the drive letter of your external hard disk. See any errors? If yes and you want to correct them (if you see tons of them get back to us first), type
chkdsk x: /f
That's the fix flag. For it to run, you have to close all other windows that use the external drive (even Windows Explorer windows).
Hopefully that should fix things and you should be able to write to the folder again.

P.S: What system folder are you talking about BTW? I think the only system folder that could be created on a hard drive, and that's not on the boot partition, would be a system restore folder. It's named "System Volume Information". I read elsewhere that it's bad practice to allow system restore to run on external drives though.

Im not using it though. Im doing my own thing. Not using anything that is on it and those error bubbles pop up.
