Dead Maxtor OneTouch Mini 4 160G

I have a Maxtor OneTouch Mini 4 160G that has failed. I've tried it on several computers with similar results.

When I plug it into the pc (Vista and XP) the pc's no longer see the drive. The drive lights are on and it sounds like it is trying to acquire the TSTC, but can't.

I've used multiple USB to ensure power, and changed all cables out to make sure that wasn't the issue.

I can think that either the head or associated hardware is crashed, or the TSTC is gone.

If it is the head, is it possible to disassemble the drive, remove the media and place it in a known-to-be-good similar drive? that should tell whether it was the media or the head, right?

Any thoughts?

Thanks.
