new hard drive shows as "found new hardware"

after major headaches I've decided to remove all hard drives from my desktop and installed new WD Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS. I installed os from new disk xp sp2. now on boot i get several "new hardware found" several of which are for unknown devices but the most puzzling is for the new WD drive. I also get the "new" messages for my optical drives (2 dvdrw asus and samsung) which are working fine. I also am unable to get my canon pixma i5000 printer to be recognized after driver install. Question is what did I do wrong???? Why does the harddrive show as new hardware? For the unknown new hardware how do you figure out what it's referring to? I got so fed up I decided to install vista ultimate (from a new unused disk) and halfway into the install it told me my computer was not compatible and refused to install. I have a gigabyte 680i board, evga 8800gtx video card, intel core 2 duo E6600 processor, 4 gigs of ram - so what's up with vista??? Yes, this is a mess - any help is most appreciated.

Re: new hard drive shows as "found new hardware"

You need to install the motherboard drivers and then the drivers for the rest of your devices.
