Backing Up a Hard Drive. Help!

I started noticing a "clicking" noise coming from my hard drive. I wasn't sure what it was, but just in case, I would like to back up all and everything on my hard drive so if I decide to get a new one, I will still have all of my data.

Also, is there anyway I can perserve all of my data along with Windows XP, so I don't have to install a fresh copy on a new drive, after I format it?

- Thanks

Re: Backing Up a Hard Drive. Help!

In your situation, I would back up all my data on to some DVDs, CDs, or a USB memory pen, then after installing XP on the new drive, put everything back on to it. You'd have to re-install all your programs though.

You COULD, image the drive then restore the image to a new hard disk when this one fails (if it fails) but only do that after you backup all your important data.

Thanks for the quick reply guys!
I came across a program called "Acronis TrueImage". Will that do the trick?

Yes, perfect, but be sure to treat the hard drive as if it could die at any minute, and backup everything you can't live without immediately to CDs or DVDs.

Re: Backing Up a Hard Drive. Help!

Is there anyway to backup your major programs without doing each program individually?

My method puts less stress on a drive. :-)

And you don't need to buy any software that way. As painless as it gets.

Try it.
