Cry HDD Hell, Please Help!

ok i have just bought a computer off my mate and wanted to do a few upgrades to it. but i have come across a few problems...

I bought a 160GB HDD because my computer already has 2 16GB HDDs which are full so i wanted to put all the data on to the new one i just bought. so i took out 1 of the 16GB HDDs to put the 160GB HDD in, but when i turned on my computer an error message appears and it keeps restarting itself. what i wanted to know is how do i set it up so i can put everything onto my new HDD?

Here are the specs of the HDDs:

(i havent changed any of the jumper settings.)

(NewHDD)
# Product Description: Hitachi DeskStar 7K160 - hard drive - 160 GB - ATA-133
# Type: Hard drive - internal
# Form Factor: 3.5" x 1/3H
# Dimensions (WxDxH): 10.2 cm x 14.7 cm x 2.5 cm
# Weight: 0.6 kg
# Capacity: 160 GB
# Interface Type: ATA-133
# Data Transfer Rate: 133 MBps
# Average Seek Time: 8.5 ms
# Spindle Speed: 7200 rpm
# Buffer Size: 8 MB
# Jumper Setting: set on cable select (1 to 2, 5 to 6) 16 heads

(Old HDD)
this HDD is still connected along with the new HDD. it is also connected with the CD-RW.

# Western Digital WD200
# MDL: WD200BB - 60DGAO
# Capacity: 16GB
# Jumper Setting: 1 to 2 Cable Select

(OldHDDs)
i have replaced this one with the new HDD.

# U Series X
# Seagate
# Capacity: 16GB
# 16,383 CYL - 16HDS - 63 SECT - LBA 39, 102, 336
# Jumper Setting: set on 7-8 pin which is (master or single)

P.S. this is the first time i have done this on my own and dont really know what i am doing or how to do it. please help! Thanks.

Re: HDD Hell, Please Help!

make sure the jumper settings are not the same for the hdds one should be master the other slave. even easier to set one on one cable and set the other on another cable.
and disconnect the cd drive meanwhile... and boot up from your old hdd first, copy your stuff, and do a fresh install of operating system.

Re: HDD Hell, Please Help!

bobalazs is on the right track with your problem. It is most likely just a set up problem. I would take the old WD and leave it (set it as master with slave) on the END connector on the ribbon cable. (Just be sure when you add any drive, that you check the jumpers on both to be correct) Set the New drive as slave on that cable with the jumper setting as slave and on the middle connector. That should let you get your data on there. Post back with questions/concerns.

Cry Re: HDD Hell, Please Help!

Cheers guys, it worked! but now i have another little problem i used this HD Clone software which copied all my data from my old harddrive to my new one which went alright. so i took the old one out and put the new harddrive as master, and then i put the second old harddrive as cable select, (there on seperate cables) but im not sure if they need to be on a certain cable or not.

when i started it up, it loads fine upto the point where it loads the XP loading screen and then it flashs a blue error message or something really quickly and then it restarts itself, it keeps repeating this until i hold the off button. and i cant just re-install windows XP because i cant find the installation disk. any ideas? thanks guys

Re: HDD Hell, Please Help!

If the WD is on a cable alone, it must be placed on the END connector of the ribbon cable and ALL jumpers removed.

Re: HDD Hell, Please Help!

Sounds like the cloning process didn't work properly.

Have a look at this guide: http://www.techsupportforum.com/cont...ticles/47.html

Re: HDD Hell, Please Help!

Is the computer a Dell?

Check the jumper(s) to make sure you haven't (accidentally) put a <32GB limitation on the HDD.

Re: [SOLVED] HDD Hell, Please Help!

sorry got another problem which i thought i sorted, but its gone wrong once again.

no matter what master/slave setting i do on my hard drives, my pc wont boot up using my new hard drive, and it wont work at all without my original old hard drive.
i copied the hard drives with xxclone which i think worked because when i checked my new hard drive which i copied everything onto seems to be there but when i try and boot it up with my new hard drive, it just boots up with my old hard drive which i dont want. i even changed the settings on the Advanced BIOS Features, but the same thing happens.
but i have just found the Standard CMOS Features which has the options of:
IDE Primary Master [None]
IDE Primary Slave [ST320014A]
IDE Secondary Master [Hitachi HDs721616PLA]
IDE Secondary Slave [ASUS CRW-5232A3]

How do i change the 'Hitachi HDs721616PLA' master? and would that sort all of my problems out?
Thanks

Re: HDD Hell, Please Help!

Both HDDs should be on the same cable, jumpered as described before.

Re: HDD Hell, Please Help!

okies ive done that but for some strange reason my old hard drive which is set as slave is still read as the C: drive whilst my new hard drive is still read as the D: drive even though ive set that as the primary master.
***?

i tried to format my new harddrive and re-try the xxclone software but it wont let me format my new harddrive. how do i sort this muddle out?

im soooo confused

Thanks

Re: HDD Hell, Please Help!

The new drive got assigned a letter D, because it's appended after drive C, so,
if you want to change your drive letters a quick way to do is to:
Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
Under Computer Management, click Disk Management. In the right pane, you’ll see your drives listed.
Right-click the drive or device you want to change, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

Windows Cannot Modify the device letter of your system volume or boot volume.
