Maxtor External Hardrive

I've got a 500gb maxtor external hardrive that says the disk is not formatted...i've tried the steps in the stickied topic for testdisk...everything seems to go OK in the process, but nothing actually happens when i go to My Computer...here are some of screenshots of the testdisk steps...

Re: Maxtor External Hardrive

Did you activate "Write"?

Did you at least reconnect the drive? A reboot is preferred, but reconnecting an external unit is sufficient. I wouldn't trust it. Get the data off the drive and RMA it.

Sorry...obviously i'm not very good with computers...by disk management u mean what i see in my computer, right? (i'm hoping)...when i plug in the hard drive and go to my computer...it spends about half and hr being jammed up when finally the drive shows up...then takes and 10min to show this message when done...and yes i activated write and reconnected the drive plenty of times...also rebooted the computer whenever i closed testdisk...thank you for your time

Re: Maxtor External Hardrive

Hey there,
1. right-click on 'My Computer' icon on desktop and choose 'Manage'
1.1 if you do not have icon on desktop, go start --- and right-click on my computer and choose 'Manage'
2. On left pane find 'Disk Management'
3. What do you see there???
You must see boot and system partition, what else???

By the way, that warning does not sound good...
It seems that MBR [master boot record] or boot sector is corrupted... If you format it, you will lose all data...
Visit maxtor Web Site and download testing tools to test HDD for possible bad sectors...
Maybe you will need to allocate MBR or to create new one...

Re: Maxtor External Hardrive

Have a look at this screenshot again (problem marked red):

max.jpg

That's, unfortunately, not a good sign.

Run TestDisk again, but follow these steps:

A. At the first window, select “No Log” and press the <Enter> key.
B. Select which drive to analyse, choose “Proceed” and <Enter>.
C. Select partition type – Intel if it’s a PC then <Enter>.
D. Choose Advanced > press <Enter>.
E. Choose Boot > press <Enter>.
New screen - please post back with a screenshot.

Re: Maxtor External Hardrive

I think the drive is dying.

Clone it and try again with the copy.

Re: Maxtor External Hardrive

At the screen below - select "Repair MFT" >> continue, close TestDisk and reboot the computer.

Re: Maxtor External Hardrive

Sorry - I didn't get a notification that you had replied.

See if you can mount the drive with FindAndMount and get important off of it.

If that doesn't work - try some data recovery programs:

GetDataBack
Recuva
Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier
