Hard Drive problem...?

Keep in mind that this may not be a hard drive problem, but i have no other clues.

I have a SATA HD in a new HP PC. I recently added my storage IDE HD. The problem is, every few minutes (pc idle or not) I get this beeping and a faint jet engine whine (whirring sound...not sure how to explain it)...the storage drive locks up (if it's a HD problem) till the whining is done, then a click and the drive un-freezes. The drive is good, I had just taken it out of my old pc and added to new one. The drive itself is pretty new. This has never happened before in old PC.

Also, it does happen sometimes when I open software that is installed on C drive, which makes me more confused as to what hardware is causing this.

The problem had just started since I added to new PC. Also when I even click on a text file from Storage drive, it wont open till it's little fit has finished...also does it when I save changes. It only last about 5 seconds, but it is very annoying.

I really wish I could explain what is happening better, but you have to hear it to know what i'm saying. Plus, not sure of any other signs that it would be any other hardware problem. I had run somekind of test online for something (forget what by now) and a result came up that my pc is recognizing my SATA as IDE. Which I know it is plugged into the correct plug on the MB.

If you can think of any info you might need for this problem, i'll be glad to fetch any specs and info you need. thanks.

Re: Hard Drive problem...?

Welcome to TSF.

Sounds like your computer has a heat problem. What's the HP model?

Check the temperatures with SensorsView.

Re: Hard Drive problem...?

The CPU is too hot - I'd guess the sound you're hearing is the cooler fan running faster to cool the CPU down.

But... the other readings cannot be correct (except the HDD temps, which are fine).
None of the voltage readings are correct.

Does this sound only occur when the old HDD is connected?

Re: Hard Drive problem...?

Dont think it's the fan i'm hearing (may be wrong)...when i hear that noise...pc locks up till it's done...and yes, it started when I hooked up the storage drive. I haven't tried unhooking the drive yet to see if it still does it....I might have to do that. Also, are the voltage readings incorrect because of the program reading wrong...or are my voltage readings true to what that says?

Also....my CPU says 142 F now...uuug.

Re: Hard Drive problem...?

It's the program reading the voltages wrong. The computer wouldn't even start if those readings were correct.

Try running the PC without the old HDD. If the CPU temperature still gets that high I would ask HP to have a look at it (you might void the warranty if you try to fix it yourself).

And - check the temps/voltages in BIOS. Usually you press F10 during startup to enter BIOS on a HP.

Re: Hard Drive problem...?

Strange...With Sensorview running, my HDD doesnt do that. My PC runs fine. Any idea what that's a sign of?? I can run PC all day with no problems. Once I turn off Sensorview, The PC acts up again. The sound is coming from the storage drive. I don't know if it has to do with Vista cacheing or what. Thats what i thought till I started running this Sensorview App.

Also, the temp stays about the same as the screenshot. I have the side cover off and I have a central air vent close by running cold air by it. My feet get chilli, so I figure to give the pc a try...still the same temp.

Re: Hard Drive problem...?

That's weird...

BTW, 1GB RAM is on the low side when running Vista. 2GB will take some load off of the HDD.

If you have precious files on the old HDD, I think you should copy them to another drive - just to be safe.

What brand/model is the old HDD?

Re: Hard Drive problem...?

Seagate 500gb...9 months old. Yea, I was already thinkin of getting another Gb of RAM real soon. This HP PC was a gift and it wasn't upgraded to the 2 GB package. Also, awhile back, I have done an online test on PC pitstop (or other, can't remember) and it tells me my PC is identifying my SATA (C) drive as IDE. Could that be causing problems as well? I can't or don't know where to look in my PC to find that out. Unless I look into the cmos....that might tell me?

Thanks for all your help

To avoid the old problem of having to have SATA drivers on a floppy disk when you install XP on a new HD, most mobo manufacturers are now presenting a SATA drive to the OS as an IDE drive. That makes installing the XP OS go a lot smoother. Vista has SATA drivers included in it....XP did NOT.

So having the SATA drive identified as an IDE drive is normal and proper.
With some mobo Bios's, you can make that change yourself.
Others just do it automatically. It's really NO BIG DEAL!

Cheers mates!
