OVERHEATING HD and POWER SUPPLY

Dear users:
I have a Dell Dimensio 8400 with two hard drives, a 400Gig Hitachi and a 250 Gig Western Digital.
About two weeks ago the power supply (350 watts) died on the DELL and I ordered a replacement 400 Watt Startech Dell compatible. It was installed with no problems but once running I was annoyed at the noise level of the fan, it was very loud.
I looked into othet PS and ordered the SILENCER 500WATT from PC POWER & COOLING and installed it. Amazing how quiet it runs, but then I noticed that my hard drives where running MUCH MORE hotter than with the Startech but comparable with the original 350 Watt Dell PS.

The Silencer looks like a "Mercedes" power supply and highly regarded. Why this heating issue?

Any ideas?

Re: OVERHEATING HD and POWER SUPPLY

How hot are they running? It could be the normal temp and they were not running correctly on the startec.

Dear sir:
The Hitachi sometime reaches 50C, but usually between 45-48C, the Western digital never goes over 45C.
The frustrating part is that with the Startech temp never reached 40C on eaither one. "Strange"

Re: OVERHEATING HD and POWER SUPPLY

First of all, I have no idea why the temps change, but those temps are within the range for hard drives. BTW, the silencer is not a good power supply, but a GREAT power supply. One of the best around, so you won't be disappointed.

Re: OVERHEATING HD and POWER SUPPLY

The drives on my XPS run in the 44-48 degree range. And I'd hazard a guess Tumbleweed meant power supply and not hard drive. the pp&c is what I have as a replacement also.

Re: OVERHEATING HD and POWER SUPPLY

Hey there,
my HDD lame maxtor from year 2003 run in the 45-50C degree range and never spoiled or pop BSOD...
On my laptop is Toshiba 160GB and usually temperature is around 45-50C and it runs very fine with no problems...
So, I guess you should not worry about that...

Thanks wrench97, wife was talking to me as I typed. She will have to quit that constantly giving me those "honey do this, do that" lists while I am on the forum. Corrected now.
