Post Xenix BBT

Hey all

I have problem with my Partition Magic and from the search on the Internet I founded it's a common problem but didn't find the solution the problem is while I am merging two partitions the software hang up so I founded my self in need to end it .... so when I back to my system I founded a whole partition was vanished ... 57 GB ... when I opened the Partition Magic Again I saw a message that their is a recovery process after it take about 9 hours of recovering ... I founded the partition wrote under it ( in Partition Magice offcorse ) instead of FAT32 ( Xenix BBT)

so I don't know but after the recovering process ended he told me to run a CHDSK so how can I run it ???

THANKS ...

Re: Xenix BBT

Your partition table was corrupt. Xenix was a Microsoft UNIX operating system in the 1980s. :) The fix may have been to simply manually change the partition type back to FAT32 using a non-windows partition editor.

While this may be possible to recover, chances are very small. I do know what will happen once you run CHKDSK (very bad things...), so I advise you to not to do it. Clone the disk, work with the cloned image, and, if you are very lucky, you may be able to get your data back. Once you run CHKDSK, that will be the end of it.

Cloning may sound expensive, but call up data recovery companies and you'll find out what it would cost if you do make a mistake. Hint - it's a 4-digit number.

I think that "recovery" process killed your data anyway. Unfortunately, you have experienced the reason why Partition Magic tells you to make a backup of all your data.

Re: Xenix BBT

So you are telling me two things :

1) CHKDSK Is bad and will not make any thing better .
2) My Data is lost anyway.

To try my luck and I may get these data I have to do the cloning thing which I don't really understand it ... I will be very thankful if you show me some steps and I will take my shot and who knows I may get my data back ...

Thanks for all ...

Re: Xenix BBT

Go to the thread referenced in my signature for exact steps about cloning failing drives correctly.

I have a very specific reason why I warn about not running CHKDSK on failing disks. It is solely responsible for many cases of where I have to say "I am sorry, but there is nothing that we can do. We were able to repair the hard disk and read its data with zero errors, but the files were corrupt beyond repair by the operating system itself. This is not a disk fault. As we were able to recover the disk and all of your smaller files, your invoice for $XXXX is still due and payable."

CHKDSK discards the data it can't figure out. If you let it run on a malfunctioning disk, it will find lots of such data.

Clone the disk and let me know when you want to try some experiments. :)

I really don't know what Partition Magic did in the end, but as long as you don't run CHKDSK, there may be a way to get your files back.
