Hot swap eSATA hdd.

Hot swap eSATA hdd.

I have a 160GB WD hdd connected SATA to eSATA (No USB). The Safely Remove icon correctly identifies the drive and when I click on it, the drive letter is removed from My Computer hdd list and it responds that the drive can be safely removed.

My doubt is that after clicking the icon, power is still applied to the drive (I can hear the disk still spinning). Is it safe to unplug the drive anyway?

Additional info: I have all 5 of my PATA hdd and the single eSATA hdd in question set to power off after 15 minutes of being idle. I have confirmed that they all do just that. Shouldn’t the eSATA hdd power off when the icon to safely remove is clicked? Thanks

Re: Hot swap eSATA hdd.

Yes.

The power won't be cut as the drive is not sent the signal to "spin down" under normal conditions. This option flushes the cache onto the drive. That, in effect, forces Windows to finish copying data to it. Once the cache is flushed, that means there is no more pending data to be written, and it's safe to remove from the system.
