Installing a SATA HDD
I know, I know.. you guys must have gotten hundreds of these, but I did search and couldn't find anything. Perhaps, someone may help me with this!
OS: Windows XP Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128044 SATA HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262 I have it on SATA 0 and BIOS detects it and when windows starts up, I get the 'safely remove hardware' icon. I'm not sure if I have the SATA Controller driver, but I did install the latest SATA/RAID downloads for my mobo. Do I have to or should I put an OS on it? I plan on using 1 IDE HDD with the SATA drive, so I'm not sure if it is necessary. How do I get this SATA up and running? |

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
I installed the same H/D a couple of months ago, although I did a fresh install of Xp pro. No probs at all. It's the quietest H/d I have come across.
If your running a Sata and an Ide then you would normally run the Os on the Sata and then you have to change the boot priority in the Bios. You don't need to change the Ide to slave. |

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
Alright, how do I install the OS on the SATA? Just boot the disk and do it the same as any reformat goes? Do I have to do something to the IDE drive or can I just leave it as it is?

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
Just tried to install an OS on the SATA but it didn't get show up on the Windows Installation, only my IDE HD.
Also something to note - as my computer was starting up, it said something about my SATA and F10, so I followed and it took me to Disk Array, and I'm not sure what I did but it's striped arrayed now. It still gives me a F10 RAID option every time I boot up.. |

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
Hey mate,
if you want to install OS on SATA HDD, you must have slipstreamed CD with Operating System + SATA drivers on it... To make slipstreamed CD read this: http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm If you have Floppy Disk Drive you could download SATA drivers and put it on floppy... 1. Start PC... 2. When it prompts you to press any key to continue, do it... 3. As soon as setup start, press F6 couple of times... 4. Setup will continue and after 30 seconds or maybe more, you will be able to choose which one SATA driver you want to install... 5. Setup will continue and you will see SATA HDD along with PATA HDD... Hope this will help you mate...

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
Hey, thanks for the response. I have a self-made Windows XP Pro SP2 Intergrated Auto CD, it's not the actual WinXP disk. So I can't really copy the files, when I try it doesn't fully copy it over for some reason. Also this may seem a bit foolish but I don't think I have fully updated my OS to SP2 due to the genuine notifications. Is there a way to check?
Is there anything else I can do? (I don't have a floppy disk drive). I found this article, but I don't have a genuine winxp disk. Can anyone confirm? http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml Last edited by sleppy : 07-23-2008 at 03:12 AM. |

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
Here is what you do.
First things first, if you have 2 SATA disks and you striped them, that is very bad. The failure of either disk destroys all data. Get rid of the array in array BIOS (that will lose all data on the array drives!). If you have only one SATA drive and it's configured as a striped array, that's normal. 1. Buy a USB floppy drive and a box of floppies. I have yet to find an unsupported one. I've tested several brands, and they all worked. 2. Download the SATA RAID driver onto a floppy. 3. During Windows Setup, hit F6 and point it this floppy. Let it find the SATA RAID driver. Hit S to use that driver (or whatever it says on the screen). After this point, Windows will detect your SATA drive and allow you to install itself onto it. If your USB floppy drive is not being recognized, there are several reasons for it. 1. You may have a built-in floppy drive, that you may want to disable in BIOS. 2. You may need to enable legacy USB emulation in BIOS. 3. You may need to disable legacy USB emulation in BIOS. Slipstreaming eliminates these steps, but I haven't slipstreamed Windows in a long time. My USB floppy is always a part of my toolkit. :) |

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
I don't want to throw $30+ for a USB floppy drive. I took out a floppy drive from my other computer, but realized I do not have a floppy mobo connector, so I couldn't really do anything.
Is there any way I can just put the drivers on it without installing Windows? :/ |

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
Alright so, I got a USB Floppy Drive from BestBuy (I could return it even if it's opened).. I installed the OS on my IDE HD because at first it didn't give me an option to F6.
Afterwards, I rebooted with CD and pressed F6 which led to me to: Quote:
Also - I have a dled a windows xp pro application which is already slipstreamed (I burned it through PowerISO), is there an easier way to just add my SATA drivers to that? because I've looked through many slipstream guides and I can't even get it to work through nLite. Not quite sure. Last edited by sleppy : 07-28-2008 at 02:03 PM. |

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
A few factors that might have been an issue:
- I did burn the cd using low speed. I'm going to retry with a different workable cd (from a friend) - The driver for my SATA came in an exe file. Do I leave it like that on the floppy? Or do I extract all of it and put it on my floppy? Do I leave the exe with the extracted files or not? |

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
I just did. I pressed "S" and clicked enter when I was ready and all it said was "make sure to put in desk labeled manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk"
could this be a faulty windows disk? |

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
I have an OEM file, yes. I'll wait until you double check what I need to have, but I'm pretty sure I have it all.. I think it might be the actual usb floppy drive, is it possible that it isn't being recognized?

Re: Installing a SATA HDD
It is possible. That is why I listed reasons why it might not be recognized ;-)
You need to disable the built-in floppy controller and possibly enable some USB options to get the drive to be recognized. All that is done in the BIOS. Keep the floppy inside the drive. You want to see a flash of green color when the system is starting up. I've had instances where an empty drive would not get recognized properly. http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...er&FileID=2693 is your file. I suggest you call Gigabyte's support for exact steps, if necessary. |
